Students are required to be familiar with knwoledge dealing with principles and theories of philosophical and socio-pedagogical sciences.

Objectives

The course aims to investigate processes, training systems, and educational issues of society in light and function of the social development. The main aim of the course is to frame the social pedagogy as a science in the context of a broader debate on the identity of pedagogical knowledge in relation to other educational sciences. In particular, the pedagogical analysis carried out in the course aims to provide students with tools which will make them capable of addressing the main current educational and political issues dealing with contemporary society. To achieve that aim, students will be engaged in practical and personalized activities which will help them become familiar with rigorous methodologies of social pedagogy as science and develop the critical thinking.
By combining and integrating contributions from both theoretical reflection and empirical research, the course intends to investigate the relationship between education and society, which, within socio-political contemporary scenarios, emerges as characterized by the influence of a combination of factors which range from global to local and require a theoretical, political and methodological approach to be addressed in a correct way.

Nucleo centrale del corso sarà l’analisi del rapporto fra conoscenza, società e formazione considerato alla luce dei cambiamenti di una società che si connota sempre più come civiltà planetaria. Attenzione sarà prestata per un verso al percorso storico della pedagogia sociale, alla ricerca dei paradigmi propri della disciplina; per un altro verso saranno affrontati le tematiche caratterizzanti l’attualità declinate secondo la lente scientifica della pedagogia sociale e sempre in relazione ai modelli culturali, alle strategie, alle pratiche educative che hanno animato l’educazione sociale del Novecento. Tra società e formazione saranno esaminate le professionalità educative e formative, ripensandone l’identità e il tipo di professionalità.

The course will develop an analysis of the relationship between knowledge, society, and education interpreted in light of current changes taking place in contemporary society seen as a global civilization. The primary focus of the course will be, on the one hand, the historical development of social pedagogy and the making of its paradigms as a discipline. On the other hand, the course will focus on current topics dealing with issues of social pedagogy in relation to the cultural models, strategies and educational practices that have inspired the social education in the twentieth century. Also, in the course, the model of the educational practitioner and their professions will be explored within the framework of education and training. The scope of this analysis will be the rethinking of the identity of educational practitioners and their professionalism.

Extended Syllabus

The socio-pedagogical reflection will focus on the relationship between education and society conceived of as a space for research in which the analysis of educational and training needs is intertwined with the making of educational assumptions to be turned into actions of change and emancipation for individuals and the community.
The relationship between education and society, which in contemporary socio-political and cultural scenarios is influenced by global and local dimensions, will be investigated at the theoretical, political and methodological level.
By a careful reflection upon emerging issues and problems dealing with educational and contemporary training scenarios, which are oriented towards the promotion of a knowledge society in the perspective of lifelong learning, and by starting from a specific focus on the relationship between training, education, and society in the third millennium, the course will identify so-called pedagogical "emergencies". In addition, in the course, social pedagogy, framed within the context of a broader debate on the identity of pedagogical knowledge in relation to other educational sciences, will present its research objects and perspectives, methods and dynamic profile of science which is still to be defined in many respects.
