Prerequisites:

Logical and reasoning abilities; knowledge of the anatomy and the physiology of the nervous system and of the mechanisms of the generation and transmission of neuronal signals, ability to understand texts in English.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to teach the student
1. The theoretical fundamentals of quantitative assessment in psychology
2. Fundamental knowledge to use methodologies and instruments of psychological/cognitive assessment in clinical/rehabilitative environments
3. The theoretical elements of scientific research (references to methods and ethics), in particular clinical research

Contents

Learning of basic concepts on the evaluation process in Occupational Therapy; Acquisition of skills necessary for the choice and implementation of the evaluation tool; Presentation of clinical cases on which the occupational assessment took place.

Extended Syllabus

Psychometrics program
1. The concept of quantification in psychology (educational objective nr. 1)
2. cognitive assessment: cognitive dimensions and clinical tests (educational objective nr. 1 and 2)
3. Reliability and validity in measurement (educational objective nr. 1)
4. The phases of scientific research (practical exercise: individual literature research and analysis of a scientific research article; clinical research paper in English) (educational objective nr. 3)
Assesment in occupational therapy
1. Introduction to the Evaluation Process in Occupational Therapy
2. Presentation of the evaluation forms
3. Presentation and discussion of clinical cases with attention to the evaluation process
Instrument in occupational therapy
autonomy and empowerment of the person with disabilities ad personam design
main aids by field of intervention.
Assesment in motor scope and postural techniques
1) Tinetti and SPPB as tools in the assessment of physical performance and walking speed. 2) Baropodometric approaches to the deambualtion and wich measures can be utilized in the computerized assessment of the deambulation.

Teaching Methods

The lectures take advantage of the support of slides and concern theoretical aspects of the discipline integrated by practical examples of the main study paradigms.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The verification of learning consists of an oral interview aimed at assessing the knowledge of the main rehabilitation techniques and brain mechanisms linked to the stabilization or recovery of cognitive functions.
Will be also evaluated the ability to refer to experimental evidence in support of the arguments and the ability to organize the speech in a clear, effective, critical way, using appropriate scientific language.
Results will get 30/30 points at maximum.
