Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge on Classical Archaeology (whose lectures must be attended on the previous term).
Basic knowledge on the ancient history of the Mediterranean, even from previous scholastic education.

Objectives

• To master the knowledge about Greek Colonization and its relationship with non-Greek cultures in the Mediterranean basin, especially in the fist half of the 1st millennium BC.
• To master the knowledge about Pre-roman Italy during 1st millennium BC, the many cultures present in the areas, their evolution through time, until the unification under Rome.
• To be able to make logic connections, of both diachronic and synchronic type, between the various archaeological phenomena present in the various contexts and regarding the various archaeological cultures which were presented during the lectures.
• To understand the connections existing between historical phenomena and the archaeological evidences regarding both Greek Colonization and Pre-roman Italy.

• The non-Greeks in Italy which had direct contact with Greeks: Calabria, Basilicata, Campania and Puglia.
• Sicily: Greeks, Indigens and Carthaginians.
• Tyrrenian sea and nearby areas: Nuragic and Punic Sardinia, Etruscan commercial interests and Greek Colonization in Southern France.
• The Adriatic Seas: from Greek colonies on Illyria, to the Greek and Etruscan emporia in the Northern Adriatic.

Verification of learning:

Oral exam.
The following will be evaluated: knowledge, proficiency in organizing knowledges, critical reasoning on the matter.
