None. It is desirable a general knowledge of the former and actual chronological frameworks

Objectives

The course aims at giving the basic elements of definition and periodization, with a solid approach to the issues of Late Antiquity and the early christian evidences. At the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired also basic knowledge of some specific themes of the course itself.

Contents

In the framework of the course, the basic topics of the subject will be tackled:
chronological and geographical contexts, issues on the the periodization of Late Antiquity, history of the discipline, the necropolis, the development of early Christian funerary areas, the changes of the urban landscapes, the early Christian churches, the architectural monuments, the analysis of written sources and the investigation of the archaeological contexts, the rural landscapes and the artifacts.

 Issues on the definition and the periodization of Late Antiquity
 General features of Late Antiquity
 Development and organization of Christian communities in the orbis christianus.
 Late ancient and early Christian burials.
 Development of early Christian cemeteries
 Christian figurative languages in the archaeological context
 Late ancient urban landscape between persistence and breaks
 Urban fortification in Late Antiquity
 Early Christian architectures.
 The “Christian space” in the settlement patterns
 The funerary areas inside cities.
 The martyrs' sanctuaries in suburban areas
 Rural Christian settlements in Late Antiquity
 Christianization of rural areas
 Productions and Trade.

Verification of learning:

Oral exam with marks out of 30, aimed at verifying the ability to expose the arguments presented during the course with clarity and autonomy of judgment.
