Objectives
Contents The BA English Language Workshop follows a communicative approach in order to help students to consolidate and improve their language skills. To this end, the Workshop consists of interactive reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities. Classes will also focus on pronunciation, on vocabulary development, and on the consolidation of language structures and functions consistent with the B1 level (“Threshold”) descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Extended Syllabus The syllabus includes activities aimed at revising/consolidating the main language structures (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation) of spoken English and the main conventions of written English. The reading, listening, speaking and writing activities included in the didactic materials are meant to train the students’ language skills in English according to the B1 descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Course Structure:
24 hours of class activities and 51 hours of self-study (3 ECTS).
Recommended Bibliography ATTENDING STUDENTS (A2):
Clare Walsh and Lindsay Warwick, Gold Preliminary B1 – New Edition (with 2020 Exam Specifications), Coursebook with MyEnglishLab (MEL) access, Pearson, ISBN 9788883395420
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS (already B1):

B1 Preliminary 1. Authentic Practice Tests for the Revised 2020 Exam, Student’s Book with Answers, with Audio and Resource Bank, Cambridge University Press, ISBN 9781108676410
Teaching Methods Interactive, communicative, task-centred lessons integrated by instructor-led activities when needed. Classes will be taught using traditional and multimedia (AV) materials, as well as authentic texts. Interactive and constant participation is fundamental. To this end, students are required to come to class with their coursebook.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The exam of the BA English Language Workshop consists of a Reading comprehension activity based on the Cambridge Preliminary (B1) multiple-choice tasks, and speaking activities connected with the language tasks (e.g., introducing oneself, giving one’s opinion) and the topics discussed in class (grammar, vocabulary). All exam sessions are available to both attending and non-attending students. Students who demonstrate possessing the required language skills will receive a ‘pass mark’.
Contacts/More Information During the first class of the English Language Workshop students will take an entrance test to assess their level of English. Students who already possess B1 competences (or higher) in English may opt for self-study activities (without attending classes) under Dr. Canani’s supervision. Constant attendance and interaction are strongly recommended for students who possess A1-A2 competences in English.
Students may take both the LABORATORIO DI LINGUA INGLESE and the IDONEITÀ DI LINGUA INGLESE as part of their undergraduate programme. Students are invited to check the syllabus of both exams as they have two different programmes.
