EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE PHARMACOLOGY Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Degree:
Course of 1st Cycle Degree in NURSING
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
The student must have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, general and special pharmacology (acquired during the second year of the study program).
Objectives
Contents The course offers the study of the main drugs used in emergency medicine contexts and in critical care with particular reference to the methods and roots of administration, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic and collateral / toxic effects and possible interactions of these drugs.
Extended Syllabus Main classes of drugs used in emergencies and their therapeutic applications.
Catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, isoproterenol, salbutamol).
Ephedrine.
Vasopressin.
Muscle relaxants (depolarizing and non-depolarising neuromuscular blockers).
Parasympatholytic (with particular reference to atropine).
Glucocorticoids in emergency and critical settings.
Antihistamines (anti-H1 and anti-H2).
Anti-arrhythmic drugs (amiodarone, calcium antagonists, beta-blockers, propafenone, lidocaine, ivabradine, adenosine).
Digitalis.
Nitrate derivatives.
Anti-platelet drugs (ASA, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, IIB / IIIA glycoprotein receptor inhibitors).
Anticoagulant drugs (with particular reference to low molecular weight heparin and unfractionated heparin, warfarin, new oral anticoagulants).
Fibrinolytic agents.
Antidotes (protamine sulfate, vitamin K, antifibrinolytics).
Drugs used in analgesia, sedation and hypno-induction.
Opioids (with particular reference to morphine, fentanyl, tramadol and to naloxone as an opioid receptor antagonist).
Sedative / hypnotic drugs and flumazenil drugs.
Recommended Bibliography The recommended texts are:
Farmacologia -H.P. Rang, M.M. Dale, J.M. Ritter, P.K. Moore, Casa Editrice Ambrosiana, (last edition).
"Le basi della Farmacologia" 3rd edition, Zanichelli (Karen Whalen)
For further information:“Fondamenti di farmacologia per infermieri” Clayton, Stock (last edition)
Any additional materials will be made available by the teacher to supplement the recommended texts and uploaded to the dedicated website.
Teaching Methods The teaching is divided into lectures whose purpose is to transmit concepts, information and schemes.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
EVALUATION METHOD
Type of exam:
oral
The level of learning related to the Pharmacology in emergency and critical care module takes place as an oral examination aimed at evaluating the knowledge (in terms of principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics) on drugs commonly used in emergency and critical care.
During the oral examination the mastery of an adequate terminology and the logical / argumentative ability are also evaluated. If the teacher is not able to be present a test of 15 multiple choice questions (only one right) will be administered to the students.
The final grade is calculated as a weighted average credit on the individual modules that make up the integrated course.
The examination procedure and its evaluation are indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the lessons.
Evaluation:
Rating in thirtieths
