A basic knowledge of Arabic and Islam’s history and institutions.
Objectives
Contents The course will investigate the key aspects of human geography of the Arab world from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It will adopt two complementary perspectives: one focused on historical and cultural dimensions, and the other one on sociolinguistic aspects. By combining and integrating these approaches, the course is intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and peculiarities of the Arab context, examining both commonalities and distinctive features within the region.
Extended Syllabus The program is divided as follows:
1. General overview of contemporary Arab countries from physical, demographic, economic, and socio-cultural perspectives; definition of the concepts of "regional system," "Arab world," "Middle East," "Arab countries," and related terminological issues based on geopolitical or identity factors.
2. Chronology of contemporary history of the Arab world with its main events and phases.
3. Sociolinguistic framework of the contemporary Arab world; “registers” and social settings; “substrata”, “adstrata”, and “classical stratum”; Arabic dialects and areal classification.

Teaching Methods Lectures with the use of multimedia supports and resources. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in the lessons. The program includes readings in Arabic related to the topics included in the program.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final exam consists of an oral examination aimed at verifying the learning and understanding of the topics included in the program. The grade is based on a 30-point scale.
