ANATOMICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL BASES OF HUMAN WELLBEING Single discipline educational activity
Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Objectives
Contents Anatomy of the nervous system: nervous tissue, central nervous system: conformation and organization of white and grey matter, spinal cord, encefalic nerve nuclei, reticular formation. Encefalic circulation. Meninges and liquoral circulation. Nods on spinal and cranic nerves. Lymbic system, autonomous nervous system. Spinal and cerebral control of movement.
WELL-BEING
Lyfestyle
- The basis of healthy nutrition, neuronal control of eating behavior
- The gut-brain axis: how microbiota and host inflammasome influence brain physiology and pathology
- Sleep and circadian rhythms
- The impact of alcohol and smoking on the well-being
- Physical exercise and well being
Hedonic happiness (pleasure and enjoyment)
- Neuronal bases of sexual behavior
- Dimorphic aspects of brain in the two genders
- Neuronal mechanisms of emotions
- Well-being and addictions (substance abuse, internet and social media addictions)
Eudemonic happiness (meaning and fulfilling)
- Health satisfaction: well-being in sickness and in health. Anxiety, affective disorders, schizophrenia, chronic diseases, cancer.
PERFORMANCE
Striatal cortex, cerebellum and beyond: the pathways of physical activity in relation to sport performance.
Cerebral circuits in cognitive performance
Molecular mechanisms in learning and memory
Giftedness: does the cognitive performance correlate with (un)happiness?

Scientific articles
Teaching Methods Frontal lessons with power point presentations. Participation and interactivity will be promoted by teachers. Students will be encouraged to discuss scientific papers related to the covered topics and they will be invited to give a lecture to the classmates about one or more scientific articles.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Evaluation willl happen in two steps:
- preparing a presentation about scientific literature on a topic agreed with the teachers and illustrating to the class (1-10 points)
- oral exam on the topics discussed duing the course (1-20 points)
The two score will be added up to give the final score (max 30 points)
