Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites, but a basic knowledge of Latin and a good understanding of the main events in medieval and modern history are useful.
Objectives
Contents History of the manuscript book from Antiquity to the Renaissance: writing materials, writing preparation techniques and codex making. Archaeology of the manuscript book and relationship with the historical-philological disciplines.
Extended Syllabus The course aims to develop a general knowledge of the manuscript book (mainly, but not exclusively, Greek and Latin) from Antiquity to the advent of printing, with constant attention to its areas of production, circulation, conservation and the changes it underwent in relation to historical contexts and circumstances. The interest of the manuscript book as a material vehicle of knowledge, but also as an indispensable tool and source for studies in philology and the history of the tradition of literary texts will be illustrated. The course also aims to make students aware of the issues of the protection and enhancement of manuscript book heritage, based on the adoption of correct practices of description and preventive conservation.

Teaching Methods Classroom lectures, tutorials, active involvement of students in laboratory activities.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The examination, in the form of an oral interview, will focus on the discussion of the topics covered in the course of the lectures; in particular, the following will be assessed: 1) an appropriate use of the specific language; 2) the ability to synthesise and analyse the topics covered during the course; 3) knowledge of the bibliography indicated in the lectures. The achievement of a critical view of the topics addressed and the mastery of the specific language will be assessed with marks of excellence (29-30 cum laude). A knowledge of the subject matter and the use of correct but not always appropriate language will lead to fair marks (25-28). Minimal knowledge of the subject matter and inappropriate language will lead to barely sufficient marks (18-24). Where serious gaps emerge, the result of the examination will be graded negatively.
Contacts/More Information Some lectures may be conducted in preservation libraries for autopsy investigations.
