The Design 2 course is presented as a design exercise articulated and
integrated into the study path of the fourth year, for which the knowledge
of the basic historical disciplines, of the technical ones and of the
knowledge of materials are considered fundamental prerequisites for
enrollment in the course. than those of the science of representations.
However, there are no binding prerequisites.

Objectives

The course aims to provide specialized training in the field of industrial design, and in particular: the deepening of knowledge relating to product design issues; the experimentation of complex systems of industrial products.

Contents

The Design Course 2 is aimed at preparing the student for the design of a
set-up for a defined space, with particular attention to the use of
materials in synergy with the environment in which the building is
located. The student will be confronted with a space inscribed within an
imaginary cube of 729 cubic meters (9m per side) in which to set up an
"introspection room", a place where the user can relate to himself and to
the spirituality in broader sense. The course is divided into three modules
integrated with specific teaching activities that are organized throughout
the entire semester. The first module includes theoretical lessons both on
the themes of interior and exterior design and set-up, and on the main
religions and therefore on the characteristics and peculiarities that the
sacred place must have; in the second module there will be exercises
related to the choice of the place in which to insert the product and the
design phases, from the initial analysis to the concept, up to the
engineering of the project; the third module includes in-depth activities
and presentation of the project. Lessons, workshops and in-depth studies
will be held by the teacher in charge of the course and by some external
experts.

Design exercise / case study
The design exercise of the year for the Design 2 course is linked to the
TIME IN STONE theme of the international exhibition THE ITALIAN STONE
THEATER, which will be set up next September in the spaces used for
MARMOMAC 2021 - Verona
The theme of Stone and Time is a theme that affects the entire history of
architecture, with particular reference to buildings of spirituality.
Students will measure themselves with this theme, trying to return it
within a contemporary space. What most distinguishes natural stone from
artificial products is time, an immaterial component held within the stone
body by an indissoluble bond. The project will attempt to reveal this
dimension of time, through the design of a space of the spirit, linking the
immateriality of time with that of the soul.

Methods of Provision

Conventional

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity of the course consists of:
• ex cathedra lessons concerning the theme and its theoretical
framework relating to Design, held by the course owner.
• project insights related to specific aspects of the theme, presented by
some guests invited to illustrate their work and research.
• thematic workshops, in relation to the different phases of the design
activity, conducted by external experts together with the tutors and the
course owner (according to the schedule provided by the course).
The course will be divided into different seminars, the design exercises
will be followed by tutors together with the course owner according to the
dates provided in the educational program. The exercises will be
individual and will constitute the specific didactic activity of each
seminar. In correspondence with the thematic workshops, collective
exercises will be provided with the tutors with the course teacher and
with the teachers invited to the workshop. Among the various activities of
the course there are also in-depth workshops held by the tutors and the
course owner, on the creation of models; on the elaboration of threedimensional
models, on the reading of design references, on materials
and construction techniques.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Progressive compulsory checks are foreseen according to the deadlines
set by the didactic activities (and coinciding with the thematic
workshops). Students are required to deliver the required documents
according to the scheduled dates. The compulsory progressive checks are
a guarantee to continue the activity within the seminars and for the
acquisition of the attendance qualification which entitles you to take the
exam within the time frame provided for in the course program.
The exam is intended as the last didactic delivery offered by the Course
to the student. The exams will be held as scheduled. All students who
have regularly attended the course will be entitled to take the exam on
the fixed date. The examination commission will be made up of all the
teachers of the course, by teachers invited by the course owner, by the
tutors and by any external experts.

The course lasts six months. Lessons, exercises and reviews will take
place exclusively according to the didactic calendar. The exams are fixed
by the calendar, beyond which no additional didactic activity will be
carried out.
Attendance to educational activities is mandatory and in itself constitutes
a guarantee of admission to taking the exam within the year. Students
are allowed to take the exam in single form with the identification of
design strategies developed in groups.
The course also includes the creation of the best prototypes (in
agreement with some companies in the stone sector) and the opportunity
to participate with the setting up of an exhibition space at the
International Exhibition of Marbles and Machines to be held in Verona at
the end of September.
