Objectives

The course aims to make the student confident with the basics for designing steel and reinforced concrete constructions according to the semiprobabilistic limit states method. This approach represents the basis of the current Italian legislation on constructions (NTC 2018), the Eurocodes and the main international Codes.
Both the serviceability limit states (control of deformations, cracks openings in reinforced concrete structures, etc.) and the ultimate limit states (section failure under compression, bending, compression/tension and bending, shear, as well as due to buckling phenomena, etc. are treated.).
The course includes a series of exercises that lead to the design of two 2D frames, one in steel (the portal of an industrial building( and one in reinforced concrete (a 2D frame of a multi storey building).

ITALIAN
Starting from the principles given within the course of “Structural Mechanichs”, the course "Tecnica delle Costruzioni" aims to give the basic knowledge for designing steel (semester 1) and reinforced concrete (semester 2) structures.
The semi-probabilistic design method at the limit states is considered to the purpose, consistently with the provisions given by the current Italian legislation (Technical Standards of Construction 2018), as well as by Eurocodes. Both the serviceability and the ultimate limit states are treated.
Calculation methods and exercises for sectional analyzes, as well as analysis and design of simple static schemes are proposed.
The solution of reticulated systems (for steel) and a reinforced concrete frame, together with the design of some structural elements, will be the core of two projects: one concerning a steel industrial building and one concerning a 2D reinforced concrete extracted by a multi-storey building for residential use.

Teaching Methods

The course includes theoretical lectures followed by exercises in which examples of calculation of structures and design of structural elements are treated.
In the second part of the respective semesters, additional hours for project reviews will be provided (steel for semester 1 and reinforced concrete for semester 2).

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Both in the first and second semester there are two intermediate tests (one in the middle of the semester, the other at the end of the semester). If the students will succeed He/She will be exonerated from the final written exam.
Also, structural problems that the student can solve outside the lesson time will be suggested.
As for the design documents (steel shed in the first half and reinforced concrete frame in the second), weekly revisions are planned to verify the progress of the project.
In the event that the four intermediate tests have positive results, the final exam mark will be calculated as the average of the tests themselves (two on steel constructions, two on reinforced concrete constructions) and of the two design projects.
In the event that the intermediate tests have negative results (even partially), the final exam mark is calculated as the average of the two final exams (one on steel constructions, the other on reinforced concrete constructions) and the two design projects.
