Objectives

The students will be able: i) to understand the genesis and evolution of an archaeological site and its relationships with the evolution of the coeval landscape; ii) to perform a field geological survey focused on an archaeological site; iii) to deal with the most common topics and problems of an archaeological site excavation; iv) to choose (or suggest) the most appropriate analysis; v) to interact with geologists and researchers involved in the disciplines auxiliary to Archaeology.

Contents

History of the geological disciplines and their relationships with archaeology. Accessory disciplines. Palaeoclimatology and pedology. Stratigraphy of a archaeological site. Archaeological materials and technology.

Extended Syllabus

History of the geological disciplines and their relationships with archaeology. Accessory disciplines: geomorphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology and Quaternary chronostratigraphy. Chronology, introduction to dating methods (outlines). Palaeoclimatology; palinology. Auxiliary disciplines: pedology (fundamentals of soil science and soil taxonomy); paleosols; micromorphology.Geophysical methods for archaeology. Anthropogenic stratigraphy: archaeological site and palaeoenvironments; Stratigraphic unit (SU) characterization, post-depositional changes. Archaeological materials, mineral-petrographic markers and technology; field equipment and laboratory analysis; critical analysis and statistics of data.

The final examination consists in two papers illustrated as PPT by the student and a discussion on the topics covered in class and aims to assess the achievement of the main learning objectives of the course.
