Extended Syllabus The topics that will be treated are the following:Measurements in psychology: reliability and validity of tests, the classic model of reliability;VariablesScales of measurementFrequencies and their distributionsTables and graphsMeasures of central tendency: mean, mode and medianMeasures of dispersion: standard deviation and varianceMeasures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentilesStandardizationRelationships between variables: measures of correlation and simple regressionThese arguments will be transmitted to the students to obtain an in-depth theoretical understanding of measurements in psychology and related basic concepts. Moreover, students need to obtain an adequate autonomy in the practical application of this knowledge to correctly deal with problems of quantification and quantitative data processing in psychology.
Recommended Bibliography Balsamo, M. (2017). Elementi di Psicometria, McGraw-Hill Education. – The manual is sold in combination with CONNECT, an online platform for learning and exercising.
Additional information:

Chapters 12 and 13 are excluded from the Psychometrics I course and will be treated in the Psychometrics II course.
Teaching Methods Classes in a lecture hall; exercises; simulations. The classes are organized in 64 hours of frontal teaching, subdivided in 2 classes of 3 hours a week, based on the academic schedule.During the classes, the professor will teach the themes both at the theoretical and at the practical level with exercises that foresee a strong interactive component between teacher and students. Moreover, the course will make use of CONNECT, an online platform for individual exercising at theoretical and practical levels. The personal access code of the platform will be provided to the students together with the text book (Elementi di Psicometria, McGraw-Hill Education).
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Type of exam: writtenThe modality of the examination:The exam consists of a written paper and pencil test with a multiple-choice questionnaire and exercises to execute with the support of a formulary.A verbal exam is not foreseen. The arguments of the exam reflect those discussed during the classes and present in the course program. The use of a calculator is recommended for the completion of the exam (whereas other instruments, like a telephone, are not allowed).Evaluation: final voteThe maximum number of points of the evaluation (30) are subdivided as follows: 20 points for the theoretical questions and 10 points for the exercises.
