CEFR B1 language skills in English (or higher). Students who possess A2 competences in English (or lower) are encouraged to take the BA English Language Workshop (“Laboratorio”) prior to sitting for the English language exam in order to improve their language skills.

Objectives

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The learning objectives of the undergraduate programme in “Lettere” include independent language skills in a language spoken in the EU. To this end, students are required to develop CEFR B1 language skills in English. Students are therefore expected to understand the main points of a simple discourse on familiar topics; to understand written texts on everyday life and work; to communicate in a sufficiently spontaneous and natural way on simple topics (e.g., describing a place, a person, a picture; exchanging information; talking about o oneself, etc.) and interact in everyday life situations; to produce simple texts on well-known topics.

ABILITIES
Students are expected to possess CEFR B1 (“Threshold”) competences in English.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND SELF-ASSESSMENT
Students are expected to possess language skills that will enable then to communicate clearly and correctly in English.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Students will be expected to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; to produce simple, connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Contents

Reading and listening comprehension activities and language tasks aimed to help students expand their vocabulary and consolidate their skills/competences (i.e., grammar/syntax) consistently with the B1 (“Threshold”) descriptors of the Common European Framework (CEFR). At the same time, students will develop text analysis strategies that will enable them to improve their speaking skills and acquire basic specialized vocabulary with reference to the domain-specific areas of the undergraduate programme in “Lettere”.

Extended Syllabus

The syllabus for the written test is introduced in the units 1-12 from the Gold Preliminary B1 coursebook:
a) grammar: present and past tenses, future forms, first and second conditional, modal verbs, passive form, reported speech;
b) vocabulary: describing personalities and feelings; clothes and shops/services, education, sports, travelling, entertainment.

Reading and Listening skills will be practiced on both course books (texts #1 and #2) in the Reading List.

For the oral exam, students must prepare the following reading texts from "English for the Humanities" with specific focus on the vocabulary introduced in the units: "Bloody Sunday" (Unit 1), "UNESCO Sites in Great Britain" (2), "Roman Eagle Rises Again in London" (4), "Giuseppe De Nittis" (5), "Beyond Band Aid" (7), "The 1984-85 Miners' Strike" (8), "Richard III Has Been Found" (9), "Defining the Renaissance" (10), "Why Major in Humanities" (pp. 87-89), "Edinburgh Festivals" (pp. 95-97).

Students who need to consolidate their language skills may refer to a B1 grammar book, for example: Raymond Murphy, English Grammar in Use, Cambridge UP, 2015 (or subsequent editions, with keys); alternatively, Diane Hall and Mark Foley, MyGrammarLab B1/B2 with Key, Pearson, 2012.

Teaching Methods

Self-study

In order to acquire 6 credits necessary for English B1 (Idoneità - Lingua inglese), student may:
a. Take Dr. Canani's English Language exam for the BA programme in Humanities (Lettere);
b. Take one of the English language courses (Level: B1 or higher) offered by the University's Language Centre (CLA). The end of course certificate exempt students from taking Dr. Canani's exam. Further information is available on https://cla.unich.it
c. Obtain an official English language certificate. Students are invited to check the website of the Italian Ministry of Education for the list of official certification boards. Students who possess a valid language certificate must contact the Students' Office (Segreteria Didattica di Lettere)

Students whose undergraduate programme still includes a 3 ECTS English Language exam will ONLY take Professor Canani's ORAL exam (see reading list below for further details)

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The English language exam consists in a CEFR B1 language assessment. Candidates will take a preliminary written test followed by an oral part to be taken during the same “appello” (i.e., exam date). The written test consists in a) Reading Comprehension section with 5 multiple-choice questions, b) a Listening Comprehension section with multiple-choice questions and c) a grammar and vocabulary quiz with 9 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 30 minutes to complete the written test; the use of dictionaries is not allowed. Candidates must pass the written test (i.e., min. 12 right answers out of 20) prior to sitting for the oral exam. During the oral exam, candidates will present one (or more) texts from Bonicelli’s volume, “English for the Humanities”. Questions may focus on the linguistic aspects (grammar, lexis, syntax) of the texts as well as on general conversation topics. Students who demonstrate possessing the required language skills will receive a "pass" mark.

Students whose undergraduate programme still includes a 3 ECTS English Language exam will only take the oral exam.
