General principles of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and neurology.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the neuro-scientific and clinical bases to understand the mechanisms underlying the damage as well as the potentially reparative processes involved in the main psychiatric disorders. At the end of the course, the student should have acquired basic and clinical notions that allow the optimization of the design of occupational therapy interventions aimed at improving the patient condition. Such interventions, to be performed in a multidisciplinary setting, require knowledge of the psychiatric semiotics that the student must demonstrate to have acquired.

Contents

The psychiatric diseases affecting the Central Nervous System are characterized by a complex etiology and composite clinical features. The course will provide the tools for an adequate framing of the main psychiatric conditions. Particular emphasis will be posed on borderline disorders that are set between with clinical psychology and neurology. The course will provide an additional focus on pharmacological and non-pharmacological rehabilitative approaches.

Extended Syllabus

The course is structured as follow:
1) Basic principles of neurotransmission;
2) Physiopathology of the major neurotransmitters (glutamate, GABA, dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine) and their pharmacological manipulation;
3) Schizophrenia;
4) Major Depressive and Bipolar Disorder;
5) Theoretical frameworks employed in psychiatric rehabilitation (Falloon, Social Skill Training, Spivak).

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 10 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 5 lessons of 2 hours.
The lectures take advantage of the support of slides and concern theoretical aspects of the discipline integrated by practical examples of the main study paradigms.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists of an interview aimed at assessing the knowledge of the main neuropsychiatric disorders and the main rehabilitative models employed in clinical settings.
The ability to refer to experimental evidence in support of the arguments and to organize the speech in a clear, effective, critical way, using appropriate scientific language will also be evaluated.
Results are based on a 30-point scale.
