Objectives
Contents The exercise is related to the design of a single house to be located within an abandoned lot in Pescara.
The house theme is one of the basic themes of the design of a single house. By identifying the possible user of the house in an artist, the exercise acquires a content of creativity and experimentation linked to the possible client, his work and his history. In this way, the residence is not declined in a generic way but is strongly linked to the work and creative experience of the person who will live in the house. The house thus becomes a reflection of his personality and his way of thinking about his role in society.
Extended Syllabus The project consists in creating a single house in an area of the Pescara seafront, with a privileged view towards the Adriatic. During the course, the project progress phases will be defined which will lead the students to define, each time, the project itself.
Starting from analyzing a house built by renowned architects through the redesign of the same and a phase of critical re-interpretation of the project (exercise to be carried out in the January workshop), we will move on to a series of manipulations and superimpositions of existing projects.
After this initial phase, we will move on to the project of a house to be carried out individually with drawings that will be defined each time and which will be presented for reviews.
During the course there will be frequent relations with the parallel course of Architectural Composition I (prof. Potenza) as well as with the courses of Technology and Urban Planning.
It is the intention to send external guests to give conferences. Some of these will be in English to familiarize students with the foreign language.
A study trip (optional) will be made to Rome to visit some significant buildings.
Teaching Methods The course will address a working methodology that can be summarized in the following points:
- TO OBSERVE
(as a moment of general learning, or a phase of knowledge of the space or place through critical observation carried out with sketches, annotations, photography, photomontage or narration and the story)
- TO DRAW
(as a moment of learning through the architect's tool, that is the 2d and 3d geometric design, the sketch, the dimensional survey, the projection, the architectural models, etc.)
- THINK
(as a moment of creating a critical thought regarding the problem to be solved and the elaboration of an idea or "concept" that represents the design will. The elaboration of the concept can be exemplified in a graphic, plastic or photomontage elaboration)
TO DESIGN
(as a moment of creating the spatial organization, the technical and technological solutions, the choice of materials and the character of the building)
This is followed by the phase of thinking, that is the theorization and conceptualization of what you intend to do. This very important phase is mediated by our culture and experience, by the knowledge of both historical and more recent references, by the knowledge of similar situations, or by our knowledge and by the study done on the subject. This phase ends with the development of an idea, or a "concept" that also represents the intentions of the project in an abstract way. The “concept” must then be translated into a project, that is, the theoretical contents of the concept must be extrapolated and made into space, measure and identity.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
the assessment of learning will take place week after week through individual reviews of students' projects.
Before Easter there will be an Interim Review where students will report the progress of their project, according to the indications that will be established.
The final exam will focus on the presentation of their projects, on the answer to specific questions related to the projects regarding the layout of the spaces, the routes, the functions and materials and simple technological solutions.
The evaluation of the work will take into account the quality of the project, the commitment demonstrated during the year and will be compared with the evaluation of the Workshop carried out in January 2022
Contacts/More Information Weekly classroom attendance is mandatory (except for the conditions generated - and demonstrated - by the Pandemic)
