LABORATORY OF APPLIED NEUROSCIENCE Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Objectives
Contents The laboratory is set to provide a practical "hands on" experience on the neurosciences topics that have strong impact in clinical psychology. The course will take advantage of recent published scientific papers on key neurobiological and neuropathological topics. The course will offer a critical and updated overview of the state-of-the-art of basic and clinical neurosciences with a focus on recent developments on the field of neurodegenerative conditions.
Extended Syllabus Course program:
Week 1: Basic principles of neurotransmission. The morpho-functional organization of the neuron. The action potential. The tripartite synapse. Mechanisms of neurotransmitter release. Major neurotransmitter of the CNS.
Week 2: Molecular mechanisms of learning and memory – Lecture on the key hypothesis on the molecular mechanisms behind learning and memory processes (LTP, LTD, synaptic plasticity, Hebbian plasticity, homeostatic plasticity, and synaptic tagging hypothesis)
Week 3: Molecular mechanisms of aging – Focus on the major molecular determinants of cell aging. Contribution of aging on synaptic dysfunction and counteracting mechanisms.
Week 4: The glymphatic system. Lecture on the physiopathology of this recently re-discovered system.
Week 5: Neuroimaging techniques for the interrogation of brain structure and function
Week 6: Multimodal neuroimaging techniques for the interrogation of age-driven neurodegenerative diseases
Week 7: Cognitive domains. Tools to investigate brain functions
Week 8: Cellular and molecular underpinnings of sleep. Implications for learning, memory, and structural synaptic plasticity.
Each class consists in 2-hour lecture with the students discussing recent key papers, making questions and/or discussing topics of interest.
Recommended Bibliography Principles of Neural Science by Eric Kandel, James Schwartz, Thomas Jessel, Steven A. Siegelbaum, Andrew J. Hudspeth edited by Virgilio Perri, Giuseppe Spidalieri
Fourth Italian Edition based on the Fifth English Edition
Editor: Editrice Ambrosiana
ISBN: 9788808184450
Teaching Methods The teaching is structured in 16 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 8 lessons of 2 hours each according to the educational calendar. The frontal teaching will be supported by the projection of slides made in PowerPoint by the teacher and by scientific papers related to the course topics that will facilitate the understanding of some neurobiological processes. The lectures could be associated, if necessary, by online teaching through platforms such as Teams, Moodle, etc.
Attendance is not mandatory.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final test will be finalized at the end of the course. Attendance is strongly encouraged, a positive outcome is reserved for those who have attended the course for at least 75% of the time. Where frequency has not been possible, the student will be assessed by a written test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. The questions will be based on notions contained in the chapters from 1 to 14, and chapters 44, 59, and 65 of the recommended textbook (Principles of Neural Science, Kandel, Fifth Edition) as well as in the topic of the lectures. To pass the written test the candidate will have to correctly answer at least 11 out of 20 questions.
