Prerequisites:

The Architectural Composition 2 course is presented as an annual design exercise articulated and integrated into the study path of the second year, for which the knowledge of the basic historical disciplines, of the technical ones (materials and design construction elements) and the science of representations (descriptive geometry). For a better understanding and application of construction principles and for an appropriate urban contextualization, the course will interface, in the first semester, with the teaching of Design of Building Systems and in the second semester with the teaching of Urban Planning 2.

Objectives

For Architectural Composition 2 the objectives are:
1. to acquire the tools for the analysis of an urban context of medium complexity to identify the themes for transformation and conditions
for the insertion of architectural artifacts.
2. to acquire the ability to give coherent form to the architectural-functional program, in its technical and formal characteristics and in its relations with public spaces.
The design exercise, therefore, is configured as a sort of conclusive balance in which the measure of the individual building elements and the size of the spaces that contain, within a compositional strategy, the reasons for the assigned architectural-functional program are integrated.

Contents

The second year course of Architectural Composition is aimed at the study and understanding of articulated compositional techniques for the design of simple architectural organisms.
The course, which lasts one year, is divided into two phases. A first phase of reading the urban context of reference and a second phase of elaboration of design hypotheses aimed at the realization of a small collective residential settlement with the creation of public interface spaces
with the context due to the new use programs envisaged by the project.
The urban context and the reference architectural space, both in the reading phase, both in the interpretation phase and in the more properly
of design re-proposal, is broken down into its essential components. These components will be investigated not only in their physical dimension and spatial organization, but also in their material, technical and constructive consistency, trying to highlight the often very clear relationship between forms, materials and technologies.

Extended Syllabus

The course lasts one year. Lessons, exercises and reviews will take place exclusively according to the AY. 2022/2023.
The exams are fixed by the calendar, beyond which no additional didactic activity will be carried out. Attendance to activities
teaching is mandatory and in itself constitutes a guarantee of admission to take the exam within the year. Students will be allowed to take the exam in single form with the identification of design strategies developed in groups.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity of the course consists of:
• ex cathedra lectures concerning the theme and its theoretical framework relating to the architectural composition, held by the holder of the
course.
• project insights related to specific aspects of the theme, presented by some guests invited to illustrate their work and research.
• thematic workshops, in relation to the different phases of the design activity, conducted by external experts together with the tutors and the course owner (according to the schedule provided by the course).
The course will be divided into different seminars, the design exercises will be followed by tutors together with the course owner according to the dates
foreseen in the program of didactic activities. The exercises will be individual and will constitute the specific teaching activity of each seminar. In
correspondence of the thematic workshops, collective exercises will be provided with the tutors with the course teacher and with the teachers invited to the
workshop.
Among the various activities of the course there are also in-depth workshops held by the tutors and the course owner, on the creation of models; on the elaboration of three-dimensional models, on the reading of design references, on materials and construction techniques, in collaboration with the courses of (Design of Building Systems and Urban Planning 2)

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Progressive compulsory checks are foreseen according to the deadlines set by the didactic activities (and coinciding with the workshops
thematic). Students are required to deliver the required documents according to the scheduled dates. The compulsory progressive checks are a guarantee for continuing the activity within the seminars and for the acquisition of the attendance qualification which entitles you to take the exam within the time frame provided for in the course program.
The exam is intended as the last didactic delivery offered by the Course to the student. The exams will be held according to the calendar.
All students who have regularly attended the Laboratory will be entitled to take the exam on the fixed date. The examination commission will be made up of all the teachers of the course, by teachers invited by the course owner, by the tutors and by any external experts.
