This course aims to develop your language, communicative, cultural and critical skills at B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). More specifically, in line with the CEFR learning objectives, by the end of this course, you will be expected to be able to:
- Follow speeches from TV news and TV programmes as well as political speeches (oral comprehension);
- Read critically and analyse newspaper articles and advertisements at morphologic, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, phonetic and sociolinguistic levels (written comprehension);
- Discuss the development of the English language through time as well as topical issues, such as environmentalism, gender equality and multiculturalism, as explored in the set texts (oral production);
- Produce coherent and cohesive short pieces of writing, such as social media and blog posts, by using an appropriate register (written production).
