Objectives
Contents Numismatics as a historical-scientific discipline. Processes and modes of
interaction between peoples of the ancient Mediterranean before the
coin. Birth of money and formation of the new concept of a means of
exchange. Weight systems, production techniques, metals and monetary
magistrates. Iconographic aspects, typological, propaganda and
economical models of Greek, Italic, Roman and medieval coins.
Examination of economic, cultural and artistic phenomena in the different
geographical and cultural areas of the Mediterranean. Economy and
circulation of goods and coins from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages in
the Mediterranean basin
Extended Syllabus The course provides a general but timely picture of the many aspects
related to economic, cultural and artistic phenomena in the various
geographical and cultural areas of the ancient Mediterranean, from the
Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. Starting from the historical evolution of
Numismatics as a branch of collecting to historical-scientific discipline,
will be tackled the various processes and modalities of economic and
cultural interactions between Mediterranean peoples before the
introduction of the coin. The study of the birth of money and the
formation of the new concept of a means of exchange will be integrated
with the many aspects of such as weight systems, production techniques,
metals, monetary magistrates, mints, principally known from literary and
Archaeological sources. The main iconographic aspects and typological,
propaganda and economical models will be deepened of Greek, Italic,
Roman and medieval coins, until the Swabian age and with reference to
the reintroduction of the official portrait on the coin in the Renaissance.
They will also be addressed the themes of the economy and the
circulation of goods and coins since the Bronze Age until the Middle Ages
in the Mediterranean basin.

Teaching Methods The course is structured in 42 hours of frontal teaching, divided in 2-hour
lessons according to the academic calendar. Lectures with ppt
presentations, possible seminars, educational visits. the frequency is
optional, but recommended.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral exam with single final grade in thirtieths. The subject arguments will
reflect those covered during the course and present in the program.
