ASSESSMENT IN NEUROPSYCHOLOGY Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
The course expects students to already have a basic knowledge of psychobiology.
Objectives
Contents The course provides knowledge and skills in the area of assessment or evaluation in clinical neuropsychology.
After a brief introduction to the theoretical and methodological foundations of neuropsychology, the course will present the clinical symptoms and theoretical interpretations of the main disorders resulting from acquired brain injury in adults, with a specific focus on assessment methods (clinical interview and standardized tests).
By training critical thinking in both theoretical and applied fields, the course provides the necessary tools for successful integration into multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Extended Syllabus Theoretical and methodological foundations of neuropsychology.
Main neuropsychological disorders and syndromes: disorders of oral language, disorders of motor programming, visuo-spatial disorders, memory disorders, attentional disorders, executive disorders, mild and major neurocognitive disorders (dementia). Emotional disorders following acquired brain injuries.
Neuropsychological assessment:
- Methodological and ethical aspects.
- Estimation of intellectual level and global cognitive impairment.
- Assessment of instrumental functions (language, apraxia, spatial cognition).
- Assessment of memory.
- Assessment of control functions (executive functions and attention).
-Elements of forensic neuropsychology.
Recommended Bibliography - Manuale di valutazione neuropsicologica dell’adulto. Stracciari, Berti e Bottini (2016) Ed: Il Mulino (chapters 2-7, 9-10).
- Manuale di neuropsicologia. Giuseppe Vallar and Costanza Papagno (2018). Ed: Il Mulino. Third Edition. Limited to programme chapters.
- Materials provided during lectures.
- Slides of the course.
Teaching Methods The course is delivered through lectures, using Power Point slides (provided to students), vision and discussion on clinical cases, and demonstrations on the use of neuropsychological assessment tools.
Attendance is optional but strongly recommended.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Written examination with multiple-choice and open questions.
During the course, exercises will be carried out on the correction and interpretation of the neuropsychological tests illustrated in the lecture.
Examination topics will reflect those in the syllabus and questions will be designed to require integration of the knowledge learnt and critical reflection on it. A correct use of the disciplinary vocabulary will be necessary to pass the examination.
Thus the examination will not only test knowledge and understanding of the individual topics in the syllabus, but will also test the competences mentioned above (cf. Expected Learning Outcomes).
Contacts/More Information It is possible to participate to the scientific meetings organized by the Laboratory of Neuropsychology.
To receive alerts, the students are required to send an e-mail to the address neuropsicolab@gmail.com , asking for signing up to the newsletter.
