A basic knowledge of logic, philosophy of science and philosophy of language is helpful.
Objectives Contents The course is devoted to the role played by formal logic in the analysis of language with particular reference to: i) structural properties of natural languages in comparison with formal languages; ii) logical and linguistic studies of natural languages in XX century: structuralism, logical positivism, functionalism, cognitivism; iii) logical models for natural language: formal semantics (Frege, Carnap), categorial grammars (Ajdukiewicz, Bar-Hillel, Lambek), Montague grammar; iv) linguistic applications: semantic analysis, translation, implementation, ontologies, with particular reference to the specific languages studied.
Extended Syllabus The course is devoted to the role played by formal logic in the analysis of natural language in the perspective of the professional formation of students in linguistics and human sciences. Lessons will make particular reference to: i) structural properties of natural languages in comparison with formal languages; ii) logical and linguistic studies of natural languages in XX century: structuralism, logical positivism, functionalism, cognitivism; iii) logical models for natural language: formal semantics, categorial grammars, Montague grammar; iv) linguistic applications with reference to the studied languages.

The final exam consists in an oral colloquium concerning the basic contents of the course and the discussion of the relevant papers and materials. Students are invited to prepare a presentation organized with the teacher.
