LOGICA E LINGUAGGIO
Offer the students a comprehensive and critical presentation of the logical-linguistic investigations developed in XX century, showing the connections with artificial intelligence and computer science.
The course is devoted to the role played by formal logic in the analysis of natural language with particular reference to: i) structural properties of natural languages in comparison with formal languages; ii) logical and linguistic studies of natural languages in XX century: structuralism, neopositivism, functionalism, cognitivism; iii) logical models for natural language: categorial grammars, Montague grammar, type-logical grammars; iv) linguistic applications; v) connections to artificial intelligence and computer science.
The course is devoted to the role played by formal logic in the analysis of natural language in the perspective of the professional formation of the students in language, linguistics and humans sciences. Lessons will make particular reference to: i) structural properties of natural languages in comparison with formal languages; ii) logical and linguistic studies of natural languages in XX century: structuralism, neopositivism, functionalism, cognitivism; iii) logical models for natural language: categorial grammars, Montague grammar, type-logical grammars; iv) linguistic applications; v) connections to artificial intelligence and computer science.

A selection of readings will be given by the teacher at the beginning of the course and during each lesson.
Lectures will involve presentations supported by slides and on line or paper contents. Students will be encouraged to prepare oral and written presentations.
The final exam consists in a written proof and an oral presentation. The written proof is a multiple choice test (4 options) concerning the basic contents of the course. The oral part of the exam involves the discussion of the relevant papers and materials of the course. Students are invited to prepare a presentation organized with the teacher.
