Extended Syllabus Define cognition: the origins of cognitive psychology, research methods in cognitive psychology; The brain and cognition: brief introduciton to the studcture and functionality of the brain, to methods of cereberal visualization in cognitive research. Atentio: definition, attention as an sensorial input filter, automatic and controlled processes, attentiona s a resource, neuropsychology of attention. Pattern recognition: pattern recognitiona nd problems of perception, Gestalt principles, top-down elaboration, face recognition. Short-term Memory and working memory: short-term memory;serial position effects, definitiona and structure of working memory, phenomena linked to WM, WM and emotions. Long-term Memory: definition and characteristics, encoding specificity, autobiographical memory. Knowledge: theories, schema: the structure of everyday knowledge; development of schema, schema as organizers, competence, knowledge and specialized memory. Imagery: benefits and limits, imagery research, memory and double encoding, individual differences in immaginatice ability, using imagery to aid physical and cognitive functions. Language and cognitive elaboration: understanding spoken language, identify word meaning, case grammar, from words to sentences, reading. Problem solving, reasoning and decision making, heuristics and fallacies in decision making. Memory and emotions. Theories on positive emotions, neural correlates of positive emotion, emotion cognition interaction, positive emotions and aging, positive emotions in clinical practice.
