Objectives

The course's objective is to provide students with adequate knowledge of the techniques and use of the principles of architectural composition.
We intend to provide them with an adequate cultural background that includes knowledge of architecture typologies, of the morphology of its components, of the management of the different scales of complexity of the project and, generally, of the critical and operational modalities through which to discern, understand and evaluate the characteristics and quality profiles of contemporary project.

Contents

The Architectural Composition 1C program includes a series of activities related to the principles and the logic of architectural composition, aimed at deepening their awareness, throughout the carrying out of project exercises which start from general and exemplary areas, up to an actual, personal and autonomous design.

In this sense, the year-end designing exercise - centered on the theme of single-family housing - will be used as a common working area.
The concomitance of the choices the students will have to make within the different scales, integrated between the different acquired academic awarenesses, will lead to an actual and efective design process, object of future professional activities.

Extended Syllabus

The planned design activities are focused on a single-family residence to be build in an atopic urban context.
The first exercise, taking place starting from the first week of March, will have as its object the design of a residence clearly inspired by a traditional typology, imagined on a 25.00 by 25.00 meters lot, bordered on three sides with other private lots and on the fourth (facing west or east) with a roadway.
The second exercise will concern the design of the same residence to be foreseen, on the contrary, on a narrow and long lot, between two roads on the short sides and the same buildings on the long ones.
In both cases, the planned volumes must constitute a functionally unitary architectural whole. They can be organized on one or more levels and, assuming the final user of a family of five people, must provide all the relative living spaces, internal and external.

The spaces described above must be organized starting from a reinforced concrete, steel or wood structure and must present one or more significant and characterizing elements from the technological point of view.
The identification, selection and definition of the morphological, typological and dimensional features of these elements (structures and technologies) will take place in the classroom, with the support of the teaching staff and of the specialists invited during the course.
The process of linking different elements and problems (in terms of form, technology and functions) will provide the opportunity for continuous and subsequent deepening of the compositional process, which must be progressively charged with managing and optimizing the conditions for integrating the various elements and their functions.

Teaching Methods

Teaching activity of the Course will consist of: ex cathedra lessons and educational communications, revisions, deliveries and progressive checks of the exercise materials.

In general, the Course will be divided into two distinct - though parallel - forms of educational activities:
• one in which the principles and the logic of composition in contemporary architectural project will be exposed ex cathedra, through examples and collective analyzes carried out in the classroom by the teacher and tutors, concerning state of the art, theoretical positioning and case studies;
• an activity in which the student will be directly involved in proposing a personal analysis and elaboration of the traditional typological models that, applied to a proposal on the theme of the single-family residence, will provide the opportunity for a progressive deepening of the themes of interest.

The activities of the project exercises will constitute for themselves moments of verification and comparison of the didactic activities carried out within the Course.

Revision activities will be carried out by the lecturer, according to the dates foreseen during the course, and will concentrate mainly on the elaboration of the project exercises. The revisions will be collective - also layed out through digitized projections and presentations - and will be held according to the scheme provided by the formula of the teaching laboratory.

During the phases of design studies (revisions) the use of exclusively paper and non-digitized representations is required; in addition to the realization of one or more physical study models.

The last weeks before the end of the course will be entirely dedicated to the revisions of the project work scheduled for the second exercise.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The assessment of the level of learning ability achieved during the course will be carried out through a final exam.
This exam is intended as the last teaching delivery offered by the course to the student.
On this occasion, the student will summarize the work done during the course to the examination committee, through the presentation of the project exercises.

The presentation of the works produced during the design exercises is foreseen on digital support (Powerpoint) presented in a projection and composed of a maximum of 6 slides.
The projection of the Powerpoint file will also be accompanied by n° 3 tables in UNI A2 format, printed according to layouts predefined during the revisions and containing all the elements, useful for the description of the proposed project and which will in principle include:
• a general plan (scale 1:500/1:200);
• a plan of the intervention (scale 1:100/1:50);
• at least one cross-section (scale 1:100/1:20);
• at least one longitudinal section (scale 1:100/1:20);
• the main elevations (scale 1:100/1:50);
• distribution and functional schemes related to the used compositional themes (possible bioclimatic operations, removal of architectural barriers, conditions of use.).

The exams will take place starting from June 2018, according to the schedule established by the Department Didactic Secretariat.
The examination committee will consist of the teacher of the Course and two external professors of the Faculty of Architecture.

In accordance with the timetable of the lessons settled by the Department Didactic Secretaryiat, the course will take place in the M3 room of the new building of Viale Pindaro, from 2.30 PM to 7.00 PM on Tuesday and from 9.30 AM to 1.00 PM on Wednesday.
The reception of the students is foreseen - prior notice via email to the address andrea.mammarella@unich.it - at 9.00 AM of every Wednesday.
