Objectives

At the end of the course, the student must have the basic knowledge of materials, both natural and artificial, and the construction of the architectural artefact. It must be able to critically assess the characteristics, performance and assembly methods of the main building materials, semi-finished products, components, analyzed in relation to the evolution of construction techniques, the level of sustainability (primary energy for the production, use and disposal phases). In particular, the student must be able to know and evaluate the conditions of application of materials and construction elements according to the properties and performance characteristics, and to configure simple construction elements in their fundamental functional articulation.

Contents

The course aims to introduce the student to the technological issues related to the architectural project and provide a methodological basis that starts from a defined framework of needs, from which to derive the choice of spaces (environmental system) and that of materials, technical elements and constructive systems (technological system), so that between the two systems there are clear relationships of interdependence.
The need for this result derives from the consideration that the technical decisions taken by the designer are not "autonomous" neither by the contents of the spatial project, nor by the numerous variables located at the various scales of the project (economic production, cultural, environmental, urban , etc. ..) but instead must be traced back to that uniqueness of the design idea that keeps space, structure and envelope linked.
Within this bond, the sequence of requirements-properties of the materials-performance of the construction elements will be more specifically analyzed, considered particularly important in the identification of technological choices, as well as coherent with the more general design philosophy based on the requisite-performance approach adopted during.
The study will take place through the analysis of projects designed to bring the student to understand the motivations behind every design choice. In particular, to develop a critical attitude towards technology, the aim will be to provide tools for the choice of materials and construction techniques at the different scales of the project and in the different phases of the process.

2- Requisite-performance methodology with illustration of list of activities, matrices, diagrams, dimensioned and dimensioned functional diagrams.
3- Structural system 1: walls and pushing systems Relationship between: structure- form- function with illustration of examples
4- Structural system 2: framed systems and reticular systems Relations between structure-form-function with illustration of examples
5- Structural system 3: framed systems reticular extructures Relationship between structure-form -function with illustration of examples
6- Structural system 4: inflexes and shells Relationship between structure-form -function with illustration of examples
7- The decision-making circuit of the building process: Planning, design, construction, maintenance
8- The decision-making circuit of the design process: Conceptual activity, productive / executive activity and technical knowledge Preliminary, definitive and executive project
9- The environmental system: the building organism and its spaces The organizational and morphological structure The hierarchization and identification of the spaces The serving space, the served space and the service space The distribution system: horizontal paths and vertical paths The organization for functional bands The consistency between: the space system and the structural system

Verification of learning:

The exam will focus on a test that allows to evaluate the knowledge of the theoretical aspects and on a graphic test. A specific list of the required documents will be provided.
