Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Industrial Bioengineering
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of basic subjects (Mathematical Analysis, Physics and Geometry, Statistics)
Objectives
Contents The Industrial Bioengineering course concerns the integration of the methodologies and technologies of industrial engineering with the medical and biological problems related to life sciences. The purpose of this integration is aimed at the improvements of the technological, industrial, scientific, clinical and hospital fields. The course will deepen the themes of design, technologies and functional evaluation of instrumentation, medical devices and implants, of natural and artificial materials, of tissues, apparatuses and organisms using modelingmodelling, analytical and numerical tools. The operating principles of electromedical equipment will be analyzed with reference to electrical safety aspects and topics ranging from the biomechanics of movement to medical robotics, up to the study of the characterization of artificial organs.
Extended Syllabus • Elements of cell biology related to the generation and transmission of the bioelectrical signal
• Elements of applied electronics
• Sensors for biomedical measurements
• The electrocardiograph
• The electroencephalograph
• Pacemakers and defibrillators
• Instrumentation for measuring blood pressure
• Instrumentation for the measurement of the characteristic parameters of lung mechanics
• Anesthesia machines and lung ventilators
• The electrosurgical unit
• Infusion pumps
• Ultrasound

Methods of Provision
Teaching Methods The program will be developed through lectures, exercises and laboratory activities.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The students' learning level will be defined through the evaluation of: i) a structured written test (open-ended questions, problems) ii) an optional oral test consisting of 2 theoretical questions, which can be accessed only if in the written test he got at least 16/30. The student will be able to choose whether to take the single exam at the end of the course or to take advantage of an intermediate test in itinere, consisting of a written test, which will focus on the program carried out in the first part of the course.
A project test carried out in small groups during the course will also contribute to the final evaluation.
