Prerequisites:

Good knowledge of Latin language and Literature.

Objectives

The Course, consistently with the learning objectives of the MA programme in Philology, Linguistics, and Literary Traditions, aims to:
1) broaden the students’ philological and literary knowledge;
2) foster the students’ critical skills;
3) develop communication skills through seminar activities.

In particular the aims of the Course are:
1) the acquisition of good knowledge of: a) the characteristics of epic poetry b) and Lucan's innovations to the epic genre; c) structure and content of Bellum civile;
2) an appreciation of the peculiarities of the poem;
3) the acquisition of Knowledge of a) Lucan’s style; b) the sources and literary models of the poem; c) Lucan’s influence on later poetry; d) Lucan and literary criticism;
4) the acquisition of further competences in the Latin language;
5) the consolidation of textual criticism competences.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of in 1) a written 2) and an oral exam.

1) The written exam consists of the translation from Latin into Italian of a piece by a Latin author. The correctness of the translation and the quality of the written expression will be evaluated. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
To sit for the oral exam students must first pass the written exam (pass mark: 18/30). The oral exam will be evaluated from 0 to 6. The final grade results from the sum of the two parts.

2) The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities.
The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
