Sharing spaces: architecture during the crisis.
In the last two years, the word crisis has assumed a prevalent role in contemporary debate, at any level. From the financial, intangible field, the phenomena of contraction have extended to everyday life, with clearly perceptible consequences and modifications.
The use of spaces and homes have changed in relation to the possibilities and availability of each. For example, the percentage of thirty-year-olds who continue to live with their parents is growing every year (even in the United States the phenomenon is growing sharply), or of elderly people who take their children and grandchildren home who cannot afford the rent of an apartment. Forms of coexistence are proposed which, overcoming romantic visions or those linked to specific movements (hippies, flower children, municipalities), serve to mitigate the impact of costs and expenses. Architecturally, this translates into a reinterpretation of the spaces of the home but not only that, spaces that were once relegated to their sole function of urban utility, the parking lots among all, and which today see the need to integrate to a number of unexpected functions. Thus the project of a car park also becomes that of an integrated hotel, a kinder garden, spaces for co-working, for services such as car and bike sharing and much more, paying particular attention to common areas, and of mediation.
At the same time, the specter of the crisis has undermined the consolidated certainties, triggering a perception of insecurity thanks to which - especially in the portions of the territory not yet heavily anthropized - a series of settlements are emerging within which to self-segregate, excluding any form of sharing. , especially with strangers. Co-housing, gated community, temporary housing are new ways that put the usual rules of living back into play by reconfiguring uses and functions in line with the contemporary lifestyle.
The contraction of opportunities in the face of the growth of needs (whether real or induced) becomes an important fact for the design process.
Extended Syllabus Program:
Students will have to choose where to place the interconnection point described in the briefing, within the
perimeter of the study area. The project of this will take into account a whole series of issues related to the integration of
different functions, and of the common spaces and mediation between them. The study area will also have to be resolved
with a master plan that takes into account the complexity of the entire area and its importance in the life of the city.
The course is divided into two parts:
The Workshop - which will aim to make the area known and propose its accommodation;
The Project - will develop what is hypothesized in the workshop, arriving at the final exam;
First exercise: Inspection
The visit to the project area (now also virtual)
provides the opportunity to collect data, impressions and non-aspects
evident from the analysis of the materials made available, such as photos,
floor plans and aerial photogrammetry.
Looking at space with "other" eyes, in an unusual way, will help
to see unexpected, unknown elements that they may become
important for the project, allowing a shift towards directions
not provided. The study of the area, of the phenomena over time
they saw it involved in urban and parameter transformations
urban planning foreseen by the PRG, will complete the construction of
baggage of knowledge necessary to approach work. There
the first exercise, strictly individual, will consist of
drafting of a table in which to describe the area through the data
collected during the inspection and in which to provide the first information
about the necessary quantities of buildings, green spaces, parking lots.
Second exercise: knowledge and sampling
Many contemporary culture experts claim that we are
living in the era of sampling, that is a historical moment in which
nothing is invented from scratch but everything is obtained from the ability to
mix the existing elements to obtain a product that is
innovative in the process rather than in the form.
But the ability to sample requires great knowledge to
base. For this reason, the examples used should be
designed to identify which project can be used
as a reference for the continuation of the course. It's not about
select formal elements or solutions, but to understand the idea
which underlies the work identified to apply it to your project.
The second exercise will already see group work (max 2),
foresees three moments:
1. the choice of the reference project;
2. its redesign - a plan and a section - so that it is
possible to deepen and understand some aspects
specific;
3. the creation of a schematic concept in blocks,
through a maquette or virtual, which builds the idea
of the complex building through the sum of more
samples to respond to the request of the various
functions;
4. the overlap of the project in the area, with the
consequent manipulation that allows to establish a
dialectical relationship between area and complex building.
It will be a question of tailoring the chosen project using it
as a yardstick with which to measure the study area.
Third tutorial: text and images
The third tutorial will serve to sort the previous e
summarize with a short text (min 3000 characters max 5000 characters)
the selected project, motivating the choice and illustrating the
founding strategy.
Fourth exercise: sharing spaces
The last exercise will consist in the drafting of the general Master Plan, and of the building project
complex, which will be presented at the final exam. The members of the group will put together the work done
individually in order to continue the drafting of the project in a coordinated manner. The latter will have to
make use of grafts coming from other references from a predisposition to the modification and overcoming of
own limits.
Recommended Bibliography There are no texts for this workshop phase
Teaching Methods The workshop will take place through a series of former lectures, exercises and deliveries of video montages aimed at conceptually telling the project idea
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
A series of deliveries and online presentations will be discussed daily between the teacher and students until the presentation of the final concept
Contacts/More Information Specifically, we will work on the project of an Intelligent Parking, equipped with a large functional program, in
able to respond to all the needs that can gravitate around such a building. Parking, in addition to fulfilling
to its main function, it will host a series of interrelated activities, which will make its use not only necessary but
even sought after. So we will go from the kinder garden, to the small market / drugstore, from bike and car sharing services, to those for
recharging batteries of all types, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, mobile vehicles in general, from the bus stop
computerized, to the coffe & book store, from being a park and square and meeting place to being an icon and imaginary reference.
There will be due attention to current issues such as those of environmental impact, and sustainability,
understood not only from the point of view of ecology but also and above all from the point of view of economic sustainability, and to
"Sensitive belonging of the project to the infrastructure strategies of the urban territory", not least those inherent to the
Slow Mobility. The knowledge acquired in the previous teachings of architectural composition (from 1 to 3), should
bring the student to the ability to invent and control the architectural project, to develop it with consistency with respect to
premises, with great expressive generosity but within certain, constructive and functional, as well as economic, rules,
with the aim of achieving that "beauty" with respect to which the sensitivity in knowing how to recognize it has been lost, and therefore in
desire to know how to reach it through a decoding process that leads "from vision to reality".
The area covered by the intervention is very large and has enormously complex characteristics carrying within itself
different and complementary themes, ranging from the landscape, to the quality of the environment and urban life, from the project to
urban scale, mobility, infrastructure, architecture, (and therefore very interesting and fascinating).
It involves working on an area of approximately 65,000 m2 in which the coast line and the river path cross, beyond the arrival
of the axis equipped with all the traffic that this entails.
The area is partly affected by the Detailed Plan PP2, which already includes solutions and infrastructures similar to the theme of the course.
For the rest it will be a question of following the indications of the program, following the possibilities given by the PRG, or simulating small
variants if aimed at indisputable improvements.
