Objectives

Synthesis, physicochemical characterization and analysis of drug delivery systems in nanotechnology and nanomedicine. Students will learn fundamentals for the synthesis, physicochemical characterization and biological tests of drug delivery systems and medical devices.

Contents

FUNDAMENTALS OF DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS:
Introduction to drug delivery systems and nanomedicine.

DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS:
Fundamentals: Differences between drug delivery systems and conventional drug dosage form. Mechanisms of diffusion and transport of drugs modulated by drug delivery systems. Biopharmaceutical and technological properties of drug delivery systems. Biomaterials in drug delivery. Passive and active targeting. Lipid and polymeric drug delivery systems. Nanometric implantable devices.

Examples of drug delivery systems: Lipid drug delivery systems (Doxil/Caelyx). Polymeric drug delivery systems (Abraxane). Nanochannel biomedical devices (nDS).
