Prerequisites:
Knowledge of the fundamental notions of Italian linguistic history and
Italian historical grammar, acquired through the course of History of the
Italian Language.
Objectives
Contents After introducing some general notions of sociolinguistics and
geolinguistics (language, dialect, linguistic variety, repertoire, continuum,
linguistic area and isogloss), we will reflect on the vitality of dialect in
Italian society and review the methods, tools and techniques of
dialectological research. The second part of the course will present a
classification and an internal description of the main dialectal types in
Italy. The in-depth module will examine the presence of dialect in Italian
cinema.
Extended Syllabus Arguments dealt with in the lessons: general notions of sociolinguistics
and geolinguistics: language, dialect, variety, repertoire, continuum,
linguistic area and isogloss; the opaque dialect; the transparent dialect;
the archaic dialect; dialect and intellectual culture; dialect in the city;
spoken dialect and written dialect; sources and tools for the knowledge of
dialects; classification and internal description of the main dialectal types
of Italy (northern, Tuscan, median, southern, extreme southern dialects).

Teaching Methods 42 hours (6 CFU) or 63 hours (9 CFU), subdivided into teacher up front
lessons, exercises and
seminars.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral exam with marks out of 30, aimed at verifying the ability to expose
the arguments presented during the course with clarity and autonomy of
judgment. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude):
1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30
with honours (cum laude) excellent.
