Objectives

The aim of the course, which helps to reach the learning objectives of the postgraduate degree course in “Languages for Business and International Cooperation”, is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the basics of subtitling, conference interpreting and business English. The topics covered in the course provide a basis for translation and interpreting jobs in the private or public sectors, as well as in the Government Ministeries.

Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to describe and apply such subtitling strategies as condensation, segmentation and translation of culture-bound words;
- acquired the skills to use the basic principles of note-taking;
- acquired the ability to translate the main business documents from English into Italian and from Italian into English.

Making judgements

At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to connect theoretical and practical issues in translation and interpreting studies;
- acquired the ability to explain subtitling and note-taking strategies;
- acquired the ability to make judgements on linguistic varieties of Business English
Communication skills
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- discuss different inter- and intralinguistic subtiling strategies ;
-provide technincal and practical information about interpreting and subtitling both to specialists and non-specialists;
- use business jargon and style.

Contents

The course aims at providing students with such linguistic and mediating tools as subtitling and conference interpreting, two of the most eligible multimodal practices fostering international cooperation. As fields of professional training and research in intercultural and cross-cultural communication, audiovisual modalities and conference interpreting are able to develop the students’ linguistic competence and capacity in
today’s globalized world. The course will also be devoted to teach such a topic as “Business English, corpora and translation” by introducing the
typical sample texts and contexts of Business English which will be analysed from a corpus-based perspective. With the aid of monolingual and bilingual specialised comparable corpora students will be able to translate the main business documents (correspondence, contracts,
agreements, reports and so forth) from English into Italian and from Italian into English.

Extended Syllabus

The course aims at providing students with such linguistic and mediating tools as subtitling and conference interpreting through which it is possible to foster international cooperation. As fields of professional practice and research in intercultural and cross-cultural communication, subtitling and conference interpreting are able to develop the students’ linguistic competence and capacity in today’s globalized world.
As a particular form of audiovisual modality, subtitling appears to be an intermodal kind of language rendering intra-linguistic and extra-linguistic cultural elements from one culture into another. In particular, subtitling may be considered a specific type of intra- and interlingual discourse presenting a series of lexical, syntactical and typographical characteristics which will be closely investigated. The linguistic aspects of subtitling as well as the so-called text reduction shifts will also be treated in order to demonstrate how the fusions of cultures produce hybrid cultural artefacts, combining source and target texts.
Likewise, conference interpreting, whose aim is to help individuals and communities to acquire a fuller knowledge and a deeper understanding of one another, will be introduced as a form of linguistic and cultural mediation in such a multilingual market as the European Union. The traditional mode of interpreting i.e. consecutive interpreting will be introduced along with Rozan’s seven basic principles of note-taking in order to develop the students’ mediating skills.
The course will also be devoted to teach such a topic as “Business English, corpora and translation” by exposing students to the typical sample texts and contexts of Business English used as a Lingua Franca in many areas of the world. After practicing such business writing skills as rephrasing, gap filling and text writing, students will be able to edit business writing in terms of sentence linking, structure and length. With the aid of monolingual and bilingual specialised comparable corpora students will be able to translate the main business documents (correspondence, contracts, agreements, reports and so forth) from English into Italian and from Italian into English.

Teaching Methods

It is a 60-hour course of in-class instructor-led lectures arranged in 2-hour lessons held three times weekly. The course is devoted to teach subtitling, note-taking, Business English and translation of business letters from English into Italian and from Italian into English. Lessons, and seminars will be followed by activities and exercises aimed at developing subtitling, note-taking and translating skills.
Course attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended and the written exam will be the same for both attending and non-attending students.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The course grade will be determined by aggregating the grade points obtained by the students in both the written and oral exams.
The language written exam is comprised of multiple- choice questions/exercises , a commentary of subtitling strategies and business English strategies;
The translation written exam is comprised of two translations of business letters from English into Italian and from Italian into English.
Multiple- choice questions/exercises will deal with the course topics (subtitling, and note-taking) in order to get students reflect on the tasks of the subtitler and the interpreter in private and public sectors.

By aggregating the three grades points obtained in the written exam (language part and 2 translations) with the oral exam’s grade point, the overall grade point average for the course can be determined.
Access to the oral exam is only possible once a student has passed all the individual components of the written exam (18/30). The student who has not passed one or more of the components of the written exam, will only repeat the failed part.
The final assessment will also take into account the didactic supporting activities conducted by native-speaking lectors throughout the academic year.

The oral exam, conducted in English, will test the knowledge and comprehension of audiovisual translation, note-taking in conference interpreting and business English. Note-taking skills will also be tested by listening twice to a 20-30-second audio track on business matters. Students will interpret the speech with the help of notes.
In order to pass the exam, students must use specialised terminology and express him/herself in a coherent and clear way demonstrating logic skills that connect different aspects of subtitling, interpreting and business English.
