Prerequisites:
Good knowledge of vocabulary and main morpho-syntactic structures of modern written Chinese. Excellent command of the Italian language. Good acquaintance with modern and contemporary literature in the Chinese language and of the socio-cultural context of the Sinophone world.
Objectives
Contents The course covers the following topics:
- Study of intermediate-advanced level vocabulary and grammatical structures related to translation theory;
- Reading and translation from Chinese to Italian of modern and contemporary writers' reflections on translation;
- Basic knowledge regarding the translation of modern Chinese (general and specific information on translation; the three essential phases of the translation process);
- Basic knowledge regarding the translation of specific text types such as political discourse, tourism translation, subtitling for art film, translation for publishing houses, and translation of modern and contemporary fiction (with illustrative analysis conducted on excerpts translated from Chinese to Italian).
Extended Syllabus After an initial segment dedicated to reading and translating texts containing reflections by modern and contemporary writers on translation activity, basic knowledge about the translation process and the translation of specific text types will be introduced. For each theoretical topic, general information about translation activity, regardless of the language combination, will be presented, along with information specific to the Chinese-Italian combination. The final part of the course will consist of discussions on how to revise the first translated drafts based on the theoretical and technical knowledge acquired.

Recommended text:
Chiara Romagnoli, Grammatica cinese. Le parole vuote del cinese moderno, Hoepli, 2012.
Recommended paper dictionary:
Rosa Lombardi (ed.), Dizionario cinese-italiano-cinese Garzanti, Garzanti Linguistica, 2015. It is not necessary to purchase the dictionary recommended by the professor if you already own one in the Italian-Chinese-Italian combination.
Teaching Methods The course will be conducted in person through lectures, exercises, and discussions. Assignments will be given throughout the course.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final exam will consist of a written and an oral test. Only those who have already passed the written test can participate in the oral test.
The written test will involve the translation of a text from Chinese to Italian. In addition to translation, candidates will provide a reasoned glossary, for which they can use the paper Chinese-Italian-Chinese dictionary.
The oral test will mainly focus on the theoretical knowledge concerning the translation of different text types.
The final grade, given during the oral exam on a scale of thirty, will be the average of the grades obtained in both tests.

The assistant's exercises, including the final assessment at the end of her course, provide fundamental support to language teaching.
