The course aims at developing practical skills in the field of translation,
by means of an approach promoting self awareness: issues arising from
translation when rendering a text from one language to another will be
discussed. Moving from the text analysis, types of meaning will be
examined, by focusing on the different levels of equivalence in the study
of translation, taking account of the morphosyntactic, semantic and
pragmatic dimensions, in terms of grammatical and lexical relationship,
cohesion, as well as variables related to the referred cultural context.
Pedagogical approaches will be also explored, examining the implications
of the translation-based pedagogy theory when being applied in real
educational contexts of English as a Foreign Language. Translation is thus
approached as a form of representation, transmission and
transculturation, and to raise awareness a brainstorming technique in the
sociolinguistic analysis of the many categories and dimensions of
meaning will be used.
Upon completion of the course, a selection of English and Italian literary
and non-literary texts will be taken into account in terms of case studies
of translated or back-translated texts and pedagogical examples.
