Objectives
Contents Biographies of the Twentieth century Italian theater (6 cfu).
Extended Syllabus The course focuses on the study of the events and the main protagonists of the twentieth century Italian stage.
The topics are: 1. Virgilio Talli the reformer. 2. Pirandello the playwright. 3. Leopoldo Zurlo the censor. 4. Silvio D'Amico between theory, criticism and innovation. 5. The advent of Theatre directing in Italy: Visconti and Strehler. 6. Paolo Grassi, an italian “operatore culturale”. 7. Eduardo De Filippo and the italian “teatro di tradizione”. 8. Pasolini write the “teatro di parola” manifesto. 9. Different types of actors on the late Twentieth century Italian stage: Gassman, Fo, Bene. 10. Luca Ronconi. 11. Eugenio Barba and the protagonists of the “terzo teatro”. 12. Celestini and the italian “teatro di narrazione”.
Teaching organization:
Face-to-face lectures: 42 hours. Seminars could also be organized.

Teaching Methods Face-to-face lectures: 42 hours. Seminars could also be organized. The lessons are supported by multimedial instruments, like slides and videos.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
