Objectives

Learning Objectives

The objectives of the MA programme in Philological, Linguistic and Literary Studies include the broadening of knowledge of a foreign European language. The main objective is to lead students to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students must be able to understand the main concepts of a discourse of a certain length and anso follow quite complex arguments, to understand narrative texts, and to communicate in a sufficiently spontaneous and natural way so as to interact with native speakers, to express their opinions, and to write clearly and articulately on a wide range of topics. The course will prepare students for the Cambridge Certificate Examination (First B2).

Abilities

At the end of the course students must be able to use the English language according to the B2 level of competence.

Self-assessment

Students must acquire the necessary skills in order to be able to express themselves clearly and correctly.

Communicative skills

Students must be able to communicate with sufficient awareness on a wide range of complex topics.

Contents

Course contents

Reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities, with a focus on phonetics, on the development of vocabulary, and on the acquisition of language structures/functions (grammar, syntax) in line with the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Extended Syllabus

The syllabus includes activities aimed at revising/consolidating the main language structures (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, with a focus on pronunciation) of spoken English and the conventions of written English. The reading, listening, speaking and writing activities aim to broaden the students’ vocabulary according to the B2 level of the European framework of reference for languages.

24 hours of lessons taught in class and 24 hours of individual work.

Teaching Methods

Laboratory lessons with multimedia support; use of didactic material and authentic texts. Students are required to come to class with their coursebook.

Course Grade Determination

At the end of the laboratory course there will be a written and oral test. Students will be assessed as competent (pass/fail, no final mark). Both attending and non-attending students are required to take this exam in order to get credits.

Contacts/More Information

At the beginning of the academic year students will take an entrance test in order to establish their level of English. All students who intend to take the English exam must take this test. Students who already have a B2 level of English may opt for self-study activities under the supervision of the teacher instead of attending lessons. Constant attendance and class interaction are strongly recommended for students at a B1 level.
