Objectives
Contents The Urban Planning 1 course by prof. Paolo Fusero is made up of three components: 1) the ex cathedra lectures on "urban planning theories and techniques", 2) the seminars with external speakers on topics related to environmental issues, 3) the training activity which has as its objective the editorial staff of a "Green Plan" carried out in the classroom through two workshops.
Extended Syllabus The cycle of lessons that make up the program is divided into four modules: A) the origins of modern urban planning in Europe; B) the city models proposed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; C) current Italian town planning instruments; D) some recent themes of urban planning. In detail, the topics of the lessons are as follows:
1st module: the origins of modern urban planning in Europe
The module briefly illustrates the historical path through which, in relation to the dynamics of the fundamental socio-economic models, the modern city is formed and enters into crisis. In particular, the reasons why, to try to govern the complexities of the phenomena that accompany the development of the city, urban planning was formed during the 19th century.
2nd module: Italian urban planning instruments
The module illustrates, in their foundations, the "tools" of contemporary Italian urban planning in relation to the evolution of the social and economic system and the legislative framework that led to its formation. In particular, the main urban planning tools at the territorial and urban scale envisaged by current legislation are studied in depth, also through the illustration of case studies.
3rd module: some recent urban planning issues
The module illustrates some social and environmental issues through three seminars held by external speakers. In particular, the contributions of urban planning to the topic of sustainable development and the protection of environmental resources are studied in depth.
Exercise activities
The theme of the exercise of the Urban Planning course_1 of this year is the development of an Urban Green Plan pursuant to Law 10/2013.
The practical activities are aimed at making the student familiar with the main tools of the urban profession. Through a laboratory activity carried out in a separate classroom in two different workshops, students are asked to try their hand at: basic and thematic cartography, basic and thematic legends, inspection techniques, representation techniques, general and thematic analyzes, technical regulations implementation, general and sector legislation, local urban planning instruments, urban planning parameters and indices, sizing and calculations, themed research on the internet, use of ICT in the urban field.

Teaching Methods The traces of the lessons (the slides that are projected in the classroom) are published on the professor's website www.paolofusero.it . The study methodology requires that the student download the lesson slides from the site, print them on A4 format and take them to the classroom to attend the lesson. In the classroom, the student takes notes while the professor, using the tracks contained in the slides, broadens the concepts contained in them and develops critical reflections on the topics of the lesson. Very important, to give gradual learning and make it more effective and less tiring, is the student's rereading of the notes from the previous lesson before coming to the classroom to attend the next one.
The practical part of the course is divided into two workshops. The exercise is carried out in groups of 2 students. Each group conducts the learning activities through an assigned methodology that is explained from time to time during the business meetings. Normally each laboratory day is initiated by an introduction by the professor who defines the topics and provides the techniques and methodologies to be used. Following the research work followed by the tutors and also carried out using the internet by each group of students through the use of their own computer. At the end of each day of workshops, students must have completed the research of materials and set up their graphic layout, which will then find definition through the work to be done at home for the following week.
Urban planning course by prof. Paolo Fusero offers students a dedicated website www.paolofusero.it The site contains a complex set of online services such as the bulletin board (where all official communications with students take place), the mail box, programs, reservations, information, test evaluations, videos, photos, etc. From the website, it is also possible to download the didactic material of all the ex cathedra lessons and the design exercises. The site also gives access to a dedicated Facebook page which is also useful for being able to review online with tutors during the week.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final evaluation of the town planning course consists of the weighted average of the assessments acquired by the student in the two modules: "ex cathedra lessons" and "practical activities". The former are acquired through an oral test, the latter through the evaluation of the A3 format book produced during the two workshops. The final assessment is also assigned in relation to the attendance and learning progression of each student.
Contacts/More Information The Urban Planning 1 course is held in the second semester on Thursday afternoon from 15:00 to 19:00 and on Friday morning from 10:00 to 13:00 in classroom M5 of the Polo Micara.
