Objectives
Contents The course aims at developing an awareness of the sentence structure in English syntax and how information is conveyed and varied in speech, taking account of pragmatics principles. A selection of English texts will be considered for text analysis.
The course will also aim at analysing contemporary language variation.
In order to both achieve the levels of language proficiency described in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and pass the final exam, it is highly advisable to attend the language practice classes held by CLA instructors
Extended Syllabus The module will introduce you to the fundamentals of syntax of the English language, such as phrase, clause and sentence, their elements, as well as the analysis of syntactic roles. It will also introduce you to the basic principles of pragmatics.
The focus will also be on Standard British and American English, RP and GenAm, as well as on different dimensions of language variation, with regard to Cockney, Estuary English. The phenomenon of English as a Lingua Franca will also be discussed in terms of its impact in a teaching context.
Lettorato classes are also provided for the intermediate level of the CEFR. Lettorato exercises are an integral part of the course. Please refer to the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo website for information about the schedule of language practice classes, tests, and instructors’ (CEL’s) office hours.

Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Written exam on English syntax and pragmatics as prerequisite for the oral exam.
Oral exam on the contents of the course, including the novels listed in the bibliography and the pragmatic aspects of discourse and the sociolinguistic varieties of English.
