Prerequisites:

It is strongly advisable for students to have already acquired a basic knowledge of the evolution of Ancient philosophy, such as those provided in the course "History of Philosophy I".

Objectives

1) Educational objectives.
The course of History of Philosophy II aims to provide students with a sound knowledge in the historical-philosophical and critical fields.

2) Expected learning outcomes.
2.1) Knowledge: knowledge of the development of a significant portion of the history of philosophy.
2.2) Skills: the ability to expound the aforementioned knowledge.
2.3) Autonomy of judgment: the ability to critically examine the historical evolution of philosophical themes and questions; the ability to critically examine the interaction and historical evolution of different cultural perspectives.

Contents

Within the course "History of Philosophy II", at class the teacher presents the philosophical doctrines developed by the interaction between Greek thought and the main religions of the Mediterranean area in the period between the Late Antiquity and the later Middle Ages.

Analytical syllabus for attending students.
Attending students are required to study one or more university handbooks dedicated - Recapitulation of the history of pagan Late Antique philosophy.
- History of late Antique Christian, Greek and Latin philosophy.
- History of Western philosophical and theological culture in Carolingian and Ottonian times.
- History of Western philosophy in the 11th and 12th centuries.
- History of the Arab philosophical and theological culture from the 8th to the 12th century.
- History of Jewish philosophical and theological culture in the Middle Ages.
- The rediscovery of the texts of classical pagan culture from the second half of the 12th century onward.
- The Western philosophical and theological thought of the 12th century.
- The Western philosophical and theological thought of the first half of the 13th century.
- Overview of Western philosophical and theological thought of the second half of the 13th century.
- Overview of Western philosophical and theological thought of the 14th century.
- Overview of Western philosophical and theological thought of the 15th century.

ATTENDING students are required to study one or more university handbooks dedicated to the development of the thought from the Late Antiquity to the later Middle Ages. In particular, the following handbooks are recommended (as alternative to one another).

NON-ATTENDING studens are required to study a handbook dedicated to the evolution of philosophical thought from the Late Antiquity to the Modern Age.
In order to prepare the related examination, the following text is recommended.
- Costantino ESPOSITO - Pasquale PORRO, Filosofia, vol. 1 “Antica e medievale” and vol. 2 “Moderna”, Roma-Bari: Laterza, 2009 (or a subsequent reprint). Vol. 1 must be studied starting from ch. 7; vol. 2 must be studied entirely.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Assessment method: oral exam or written exam, according to the choice of the student.

Characteristics of the oral exam.
- The oral exam can be sustained by the student of the cohort on the occasion of every exam to which he/she can legitimately enroll.
- The oral exam will be in the form of questions that the examiner will ask to the candidate.
- The candidate will be marked according to the amount and accuracy of the knowledge that he/she is expected to have learned, on his/her ability to expound on it and on his/her ability to critically examine the historical evolution in question, including the interaction between different cultural perspectives.
- Marks will be given out of thirty.
- Incoming students in international mobility can take the oral exam in English.

Characteristics of the written test.
- The written test can be chosen by the cohort student in a single date, which will be communicated separately.
- The written test is restricted to students who qualify themselves as "non-attending students" and focuses on the topics presented by the teacher to the attending students.
- The written test has the form of a multiple choice test.
- The candidate will be marked according to his/her ability to understand the possibile answers and to choose the correct ones; the test is arranged in order to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the knowledge of the student and his/her capability to examine critically the historical evolution of thought, also in the dimension of the interaction between different cultural perspectives .
- Marks will be given out of thirty.
- Further details on the written test, the way to calculate the final grade, date and time of the test, will be published in the "materiale didattico" section of the website of the Department of Philosophical, Pedagogical and Economic-Quantitative Sciences ( https://www.disfipeq.unich.it/node/6876 ).

No signatures are collected during the lessons. The qualification of "attending" or "non-attending" student is granted to the free and responsible assessment and decision of the student, who will declare his/her status on the occasion of the exam. It should be noted, however, that the handbooks of Gilson and Vanni Rovighi - for instance - bear a significant theoretical bend; in order to be aware of this aspect of the texts and to develop a correct historiographic methodology, attending the lessons is advisable.

Official office hours are indicated in the document published on the website of the Department of Philosophical, Pedagogical and Economic-Quantitative Sciences. Nonetheless, students are strongly recommended to ask for an appointment by e-mail, briefly presenting the queries they intend to submit to the teacher. The teacher will also be available to see students at different hours to the official ones.
