Knowledge of fundamental concepts of developmental psychology (briefly treated during first lessons).

Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
• General themes and methodological approaches in developmental psychology.
• Possible applicable search alternatives.
• Theoretical foundations of observation.
• Methodological aspects of direct and indirect observation techniques.
• Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
• Critical analysis and correct design of development research.
• Planning and implementation of evaluation protocols.
• Mastery of observational techniques within the domains of development

Contents

The research and diagnostic methods used in the development will be analyzed and the problems that may be encountered in the design and implementation of studies aimed at analyzing change will be discussed. The direct and indirect observation techniques will also be illustrated and some evaluation tools will be presented, discussing their limits and usefulness.
A series of methods and tools for psychological assessment in different areas of child development (cognitive, linguistic, socio-emotional development) will be presented, in particular those available for the Italian population.
The assessment paths in specific clinical populations will be studied in depth, as in the case of DSA, ADHD and ASD.

Goals of research in developmental psychology.
• General characteristics of observational behavior detection techniques.
• Strategies for the use of observational techniques.
• Evaluation and control of the reliability of observational surveys.
• Application of observational surveys to development research.
• Knowledge of the main assessment tools in the field of developmental psychology
• Knowledge of assessment pathways in specific clinical populations, such as in the case of DSA, ADHD and ASD.

Methods of Provision

Conventional

Teaching Methods

Lectures provide guidelines for interpreting book. During lessons, students will be asked to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired, through individual or group work.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

During the course: presentation of selected topics and discussion of clinical case evaluations. Final: oral exam with open questions. The results will get a maximum of 30/30 points.

For students attending the practical workshops, the final exam will be in oral form. During the interview, the student will demonstrate his/her ability to communicate the topics covered during the classes both to an expert audience and in a disseminative form.

The final grade, expressed in thirtieths (minimum pass grade: 18/30; maximum: 30/30), will be as follows: 50% knowledge of the topics; 20% ability to explain the topics in both a scientific and informative talk; 30% quality of the research project developed during the practical workshops and / group activities.
For students not attending the practical workshops:
The examination takes place in oral form and focus on the recommended texts and research articles. Students will prove to be able to discuss the course’s topics both in scientific and informative disseminative form.
