Objectives

The course aims to offer expert knowledge of children social and emotional development. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Know in details how social and emotional competence (considered as a multi-component phenomenon) develop across time starting from the first months of life; protective and risk factors involved in the social-emotional development (including the development of emotion regulation, empathy and moral development) across contexts (family, school, peers); methods for assessing socio-emotional development and intervention to promote children’s positive socio-emotional development; theories on social and emotional development
- Elaborate and correctly apply theoretical knowledge into the different contexts of development, including typical and atypical
- To analyze in a critical and independent way the scientific literature in the field
- To deepen the understanding of aspects of interest (including theory, assessment methods and intervention approaches) referring to the most recent scientific literature
- Discuss in a critical way the knowledge acquired during the course when working in small groups, big groups, and with the teacher, using an appropriate and scientifically informed language

Contents

Emotional and social development from preschool years. Individual-environment interaction interplay in the socio-emotional development. Assessment methods for evaluating socio-emotional competences and behavioural problems at home and in the school environment. Evidence-based interventions to prevent socio-emotional problems at home and at school

Extended Syllabus

The course will present emotional and social development theories and specifically emotional competences, emotional socialisation, social competence and the contribution of emotion related processes and moral development on children’s adjustment to the context, including the school and the family environment. Different life contexts will be examined, such as family, school, peer groups and the relationships inside each of them. A selected look will be deserved to emotional development. Moreover, individual differences in adapting to the social environment will be examined and maladaptive adjustment will be taken into consideration. The module will also present the main tools to detect and evaluate social skills and emotional competences, and guidelines from evidence-based intervention programs will be provided.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures and practical activities. Student’s active participation to classes is highly recommended. Supplemental material for class and homework will be provided. Attending students will be required to write short essays, give presentations and read scientific articles. Videos, presentations and scientific article will be used a didactic material. Attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists in two parts: an oral exam with open questions on the whole program and a written essay. The oral exam has the aim to verify the knowledge of the main thematic related to the course. The written essay is realized at home and consists of the administration, coding and comment of the tools described during the practical part of the course. The final vote is composed the 80% by the oral exam and the 20% by the written essay.
