Prerequisites:

Students will be familiar with Italian literary history as learnt in the high school. Familiarity with critical methodologies is one of the objectives of the university syllabus and will therefore not be regarded as a pre-requisite.

Objectives

Objectives:
1) familiarizing with the notions of diegesis, mimesis, temporality and the dialogic dimension of the text.
2) developing a critical approach to literary history and the notion of literary canon.
3) adopting an interpretative angle enabling the understanding of the evolution of literary genres and the relevance of the classics in their historical as well as contemporary dimension.
4) observing and investigating intertextual relationships.
5) analysing a literary text in respect of its spatio-temporal structures and its nature as a communicative system.

Contents

Theatrical text and narrative text: the Italian comedy from 1500 to 1900
The course aimes at analyzing the differences between narrative and dramatic text, insisting on the categories of mimesis and diegesis.
It will focus on the categories of space and time, and on the way they are differently declined with respect to the textual genre, to the style of the author, to poetics. The course will also focus on the transition from narrative to dramatic text in theatrical adaptations, from 16th century comedy to 20th century one.

Power-point assisted Lectures; seminars, occasionally conducted by specialist guest speakers

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Students will take an oral exam, conversing on the topics dealt with in class and listed in this syllabus. They will be asked 6-7 questions meant to assess their ability to express themselves correctly, and their knowledge of the historical context, the socio-cultural issues, as well as the stylistic and thematic peculiarities of the authors’ works. Their ability to understand and conduct a critical analysis of the literary texts listed in this syllabus will be also assessed.
The final score will be from 0 to 30. Students will pass the exam with a sufficient score if they show a basic knowledge of the topics; they will get an excellent score if they show a very good knowledge of the topics and an ability to develop an in-depth analysis and a critical discourse on them.
