1. Didactic purposes and theme of the course
The topics addressed in the two phases introduce the 4th year student to the development of a project that requires the alternation of the transition of scale from the understanding / interpretation of the landscape to the study of the building, up to the understanding of the architectural detail. In particular, the course takes as a broader background theme, the redevelopment of the river landscape and the design of connected neighborhood services.
First phase (WORKSHOP 5-9 September)
Project theme: temporary public structures for a Sailing School at the mouth of the Saline river (Montesilvano – PE).
The course consists of a design test that takes as a broader background theme, the redevelopment of the abandoned river landscape at the mouth of the Saline river.
The context is strongly characterized by the presence of tourist accommodation facilities, by congress centers with relative large areas intended for parking, today oversized compared to the real use and the question. This condition significantly affects the cancellation of the presence of the river, already heavily damaged by pollution, compared to local urban life. Starting from acquiring as a priori an appropriate reclamation of the area, the exercise involves the design of temporary and removable minimum service structures for activities public related to the livability of the river and its enhancement even in non-seasonal periods.
Second phase (LABORATORY. Second semester)
The theme of the Laboratory is developed within an "on-board" area between the valley of the Aniene Park and the front of the Garden City – Montesacro – in Rome. The place, currently characterized by the presence of the abandoned buildings of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, represents an important hinge between the environmental system of the River Aniene and the Garden City of Montesacro, which, designed in 1919 by a team of architects led by Gustavo Giovannoni, still preserves a good part of the original historical heritage.
The design exercise involves the mending between the Park and the neighborhood through the redevelopment of the former IPZS area with the inclusion of new cultural and sports activities, for psychophysical well-being .
Design exercise : New Spas.
In analogy to the thermal buildings of antiquity, the artifact provides for the coexistence of two large families of activities: those dedicated to the body and those dedicated to the mind (mens sana in corpore sano). The first one is about changing rooms, gyms, swimming pool, sports fields, a spa etc ... At the second the library, a multipurpose room, a small conference room, etc ... Common to both are the general services, including the reception, catering, bar ...
Considering the river context and the richness of the program, the design of the open spaces pertaining to the building assumes great importance, both for its better location and for the outdoor expansion of indoor activities.
2. Organization of the Course:
The course is divided into ex-cathedra lessons and seminar moments: the first consist of the communications of the teacher of the course itself or of other teachers, specially invited. The seminar sessions are bothcollective discussions on specific issuesand collective reviews of learners' elaborations.
