Objectives
Contents The course is aimed at transmitting the theoretical and methodological contents for the understanding of the aims and areas of the restoration intervention, in the peculiar theoretical reasons, in the theoretical foundations and in the methodological issues.
The different ways of intervention carried out in the various eras will be studied in depth and, together with the fundamental history-restoration nexus, the elements that contribute to defining the framework of current conservation practice will be described; also analyzing, for exemplary cases, each critical orientation. A broad analytical-diagnostic panorama will also be outlined regarding the 'matter' and the operating methods of restoration, investigating the intervention techniques and innovative developments.
Extended Syllabus 1. General problems: definitions and basic terminology.
2. The discipline of Restoration: Theory-Theories; History of the restoration; current guidelines; Beyond the restoration.
3. Historical-critical reading of the monument, diachronic and synchronic, substantial and contextualized, aesthetic and formal, geometric and material
4. The extension of the field of restoration from the object to the territory.
5. The relationship between the various arts: 'restoration' and 'restoration of monuments'.
6. The theoretical foundation of restoration, the most recent method proposals (plurality and trends).
7. First acts on the conservation of works of art; from the birth of restoration in the modern sense to current trends.
8. General rules for the restoration of monuments. The 'Cards' of restoration.
9. The 'direct reading' of the historical building and the comparison with the literary sources.
10. Notes on the cataloging of 'monuments' (files, ICCD, methodologies and reference standards)
11. The restoration project respecting the authenticity of the monument: theoretical questions and technical choices.
12. Methods of 'direct' and instrumental survey of historical architecture and techniques of representation of the restoration project.
13. Chemical-physical investigation techniques for the study of architectural materials and the control of intervention methodologies.
14. Analysis and interpretation of the forms of degradation of architectural materials: causes and processes. Drafting of thematic tables (legislation and lexicon).
15. Restoration and conservation of natural and artificial stone materials: pre-consolidation, cleaning, consolidation and protection.
16. Reading and analysis of the forms of degradation of architectural structures with particular attention to the architectural heritage in seismic areas.
17. Safety measures and preventive consolidation of real estate.
18. The 'critical' consolidation. Traditional techniques and not. Recovery of reinforced concrete structures. The restoration of wooden structures.
19. Restoration and context. Restoration on an urban scale.
20. Archaeology, restoration, museography.
21. From the project to the restoration site: the planning phases; the management and supervision of the works; the maintenance schedule.

Teaching Methods In order to ensure adequate skills in understanding and evaluating the historical building and its context, the course is divided into both theoretical and more properly technical lessons, during which the various topics will be illustrated also through case studies and with the help of visits didactic. The study of an architecture or an urban context is foreseen.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The evaluation of the results achieved by the students will be conducted through an individual exam. After an interview on the topics covered in the lessons and in the basic bibliography, the exercise carried out will be discussed.
