Objectives
Contents Elements of phonetics, morphology and syntax of Portuguese. History and geography of Portuguese-speaking countries.
History of the Portuguese language and specificity of Portuguese/Brazilian in the set of Romance languages. The first grammars of the Portuguese language and the discoveries of the "new world". The Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese Language. Elements of Portuguese/Brazilian sociolinguistics.
Extended Syllabus The Portuguese and Brazilian language course will focus on the linguistic, cultural and geopolitical aspects of the Portuguese-speaking countries (10 countries); on the specificities of the Portuguese language within the Romance languages; on the specificities of European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese from a phonetic, morphological, phonological, syntactic and pragmatic point of view. The orthographic issues of Portuguese will be addressed and an overview of its first grammars will be provided. In addition, specific historical, cultural and artistic elements of many of the Portuguese official language countries will be provided through the cultural products shared by and in the linguistic communities of reference, often through international research relationships in place with the Department and managed by the teacher.

Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Written test to verify written comprehension through translation and comprehension questions; applied grammar exercises. Oral test to verify oral comprehension and expression, as well as the theoretical contents of the teacher's course.
Contacts/More Information The Portuguese course has a Brazilian tutorship from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Guimarães Rosa Institute of the Brazilian Embassy (Rome) in collaboration with the "d'Annunzio" University. This type of readership is present in only two Italian universities and in 19 countries around the world. The Lecturer is present exclusively in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures and carries out lecturer activities, seminars and workshops.
