Objectives
Contents The workshop aims to provide basical skills to critically use and realize databases concerning philological and literary information. After and introduction, which will illustrate most helpful uses of databases in humanistic fields, there will be practical lessons with exercises on these topics: analysis of back and frontend of a database; XML language; text-encoding software.
Extended Syllabus The workshop aims to provide basical skills to critically use and realize databases concerning philological and literary information. After and introduction, which illustrate most helpful uses of databases in humanistic fields, there will be practical lessons with exercises on these topics: analysing back and frontend of a database, learning XML language, using a text-encoding software.
Attendance to this course is highly recommended. The text-encoding software is free: students will download it following the teacher’s instructions.
More bibliography on open access may be provided during the course.
The final assessment consists of a written and an oral exam on the entire syllabus, which will follow a written test concerning text-encoding skills.

Teaching Methods The Wokshop consists of 12 lessons (24 hours, 2 lessons per week). There will be both lectures (with slides) and exercitations. Students will be tested to assess their learning.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final assessment consists of a written and an oral exam on the entire syllabus, which will follow a written test concerning text-encoding skills.
Students will not be graded, but awarded a 'pass mark' (ie., pass/fail).
Only those who have taken part in at least 9 of the 12 lessons organized by the teacher may take the written test at the end of the Workshop.
