Objectives

Provide students with the appropriate technical and linguistic tools in order to develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform dialogic interpretation to the best of their ability.
The main knowledge and skills to be achieved are:
- improve oral comprehension in Italian and English
- learning translation strategies that are functional for different situations and communicative contexts, with particular attention to register and style;
- deepen knowledge of the culture of English-speaking countries;
- reflect on ethical/professional issues related to linguistic/cultural mediation;
- master specific terminology in the semantic fields that will arise during the course;
- to sound out the micro-languages of the situations most frequently encountered in "for special purposes" language mediation contexts.

Contents

After exploring the theoretical and methodological aspects of language mediation, the course will focus on the development of listening comprehension with authentic and current materials. Various activities will be calibrated to encourage the acquisition of a greater lexical variety in the foreign language as well as learning the techniques of linguistic reformulation in order to develop an ability to interact and mediate in situations requiring a thorough knowledge of English and Italian (cross-cultural contacts and exchanges, etc.). Ample space will be devoted to the study and analysis of methods and techniques of text interpretation/comprehension.

Extended Syllabus

1) Theoretical and methodological aspects The concept of mediation: conceptual roots and typological parameters. Mediation in linguistic disciplines. 2) Strengthening cognitive and communicative skills. Linguistic exercise: use of authentic materials (television and radio news programmes, lectures, dialogues, talk shows, documentaries, interviews, debates, etc.) to develop oral language skills and thus facilitate "entry" into English-speaking culture. Particular attention will be paid to contact management in language mediation in the areas of tourism, culture, environment and film. 3) Vocabulary enhancement

Verification of learning:

Listening comprehension test for admission to the oral exam with questions on course contents and a sight translation test.
