Prerequisites:

Students are required to have a knowledge of the English language at a B2 level, according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in order to understand the concepts exposed during the course.

Objectives

In line with the objectives of the CdS, the aim of the course is to provide a deep knowledge of the most complex grammatical, morpho-syntactical and lexical structures of the English language in order to reach an advanced level of competence. The course aims to consolidate the skills of comprehension, written production and speaking, as well as to provide the appropriate tools for the analysis of a literary text in English.

Contents

The course consists of one module:
"Exploring Language and Literature: Approaches to Textual Analysis" (6CFU)

The purpose of the course will be to provide students with the appropriate tools for the analysis of literary texts, both narrative and poetry. Starting from different theoretical considerations and perspectives, the course will aim at deepening the intratextual elements that determine the production of meaning. Particular importance will be given to the analysis of the following aspects: characterization, setting, time, focalization, rhetorical techniques, phonological and structural features, lexis.

Teaching Methods

The course includes the following activities:
1) lectures held by the professor;
2) tutorials and other teaching activities (in classroom, in laboratories, at distance) organized by the linguistic experts of the CLA.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists of a written test and of an oral one, both assessed in thirtieths. The written test is divided in two parts:
the first pat focuses on a multi-level analysis of a literary text, of its narrative techniques, style, contents, lexicon, linguistic register, symbolic and rhetorical level; the second part consists of a grammatical and vocabulary section (rephrase, word-building, lexical items, phrasal verbs, sentence translation) at a B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
