This course meets the general objective, pursued by the Course of Study, of enabling students to acquire a solid proficiency in the language they have chosen to study (i.e. written and spoken Chinese), corresponding to level b2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In this process, this course specifically aims at providing students with the lexical and grammatical tools needed to understand newspaper articles. Being able to read Chinese news in Chinese is, indeed, a fundamental key to an in-depth and more specialized knowledge of China’s politics, society and culture as well.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the course students should:
- confidently master the grammatical structures of modern Chinese (both written and oral language);
- be able to understand the lexicon and morpho-syntactic structures used in newspaper jargon.
Applying knowledge and understanding
By the end of the course students should:
- be able to organize and transmit information regarding their personal life and work or regarding sectoral fields (especially political and social fields), both to an audience of specialists and non-specialist.
Making judgements
By the end of the course students should:
- on the basis of the four linguistics abilities, be able to describe and analyze newspaper articles (especially about social and political matters) and their specialist language.
Communication
By the end of the course students should:
- be able to interact in Chinese at different linguistic levels and registers.

- have acquired an adequate study method and the ability of working autonomously in reference to both written and oral comprehension and production.
