Prerequisites:
As this is an introductory course, it does not require any specific knowledge.
Objectives
Contents Fundamental features of human language and of language signs; language as a system of communication; illustration of the functioning of historical-natural languages according to the main levels of linguistic analysis (phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax) with their interconnections (morpho-phonology and morpho-syntax).
Extended Syllabus 1) Theoretical and methodological aspects
• The notion of language sign and fundamental features of historical-natural languages (biplanarity, arbitrariness, double articulation, linearity, etc);
• exemplification of different viewpoints according to which it is possible to analyse a natural language (synchrony/diachrony, diastratic, diaphasic and diamesic variability);
• language as a system of communication.
2) Phonetic and phonological level
• Articulatory phonetics; the notion of phone, the classification of language sounds, the phonetic transcription according to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) conventions;
• phonology: the notion of phoneme; classical Prague phonology as a descriptive model of the functioning of sounds within a given linguistic system; elements of contrasting phonology between Italian and the main European languages.
3) Principles of morphology and syntax
• Illustration of the functioning of other levels of language analysis, with special reference to morphological and syntactic levels, finally dealing with the interconnections between the different planes (morpho-phonology and morpho-syntax). Special attention will be devoted to the interplay between syntax and pragmatics with the analysis of the main syntactically marked constructs to be found in Italian, in a communicative perspective.

Teaching Methods Taught classes together with practice drills aimed at theoretical in-depth analysis of the issues dealt with in class, and at their practical application.
This discipline is characterised by technical, specific contents that students coming from secondary schools are not familiar with, therefore attendance is warmly recommended.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Final oral test. Students who regularly attended are allowed and given the opportunity to take two optional ongoing tests during the Course. They will be in the form of a written questionnaire made up of open questions with predefined response space and multiple-choice questions; the final score will result from the average of the scores got in the single tests. The students who have obtained a final score of at least 18/30 will be allowed, if they wish, to dispense with the oral test, by entering directly the mark resulting from the average of the written tests.
